Teardown and G-Comp Rear Suspension Install | 1968 C10 Build Episode 2
With our '68 C10 project safely yanked from the snowdrift and delivered to our shop, we wasted little time tearing it apart. But first, we were careful to document in photos how everything went together. We've found this step to be critical when it comes time to put things back where they belong.
With a bare chassis in front of us, we discovered that we had a clean, straight original shortbox chassis, with one glaring exception. You guessed it, that torched and booger-welded rear crossmember had to go. With that crossmember staring us in the face, and the idea that we wanted the truck to end up a clean driver that we could road trip anywhere, we decided to install our G-Comp 1967-1972 C10 Coilover Truck Arm rear suspension kit. This would give us fresh components, the adjustability of coilovers, and and a chance to put some real world miles on one of our products.
Since we want the truck to be low, we also installed our C-Notch kit. This bolt-on kit worked well with the G-Comp suspension, requiring only minor trimming to clear the panhard bar bracket.
In keeping with the budget-build theme, we were planning to rebuild and reuse the original rearend. But, again in the interest of something that we could put a ton of miles on (and maybe put some real power to), we elected to use one of our Bolt-In 9" Housings, which comes complete with all the brackets to fit right into our C10. We paired this housing with a 3.50-geared Street 3rd Member and a budget friendly rear disc brake kit.
We were thrilled with the way all these parts came together. Bolting freshly painted parts together is far more enjoyable than the crusty and rusty original pieces that came off. Stay tuned next time as we tackle the front and make it a roller!
