Rusty Cab Revival | 1968 C10 Build Episode 6
Trucks tend to live harder lives than the family sedan or weekend cruiser. They’re built to be used as workhorses, not parked in the garage and pampered. As such, many of the project trucks that turn up for sale these days are even rougher around the edges than you might see if shopping for a contemporary sedan or muscle car.
This is especially true here in the Midwest, where these trucks appear to have come from the factory with rust in the rockers, cab corners, and in the pockets at the bottom of the front fenders. But fortunately, Speedway Motors offers a huge selection of replacement sheet metal to help you take care of all those rough and rusty areas.
Our Project ’68 C10 was no exception. It had rust in all the usual places and then some. It was bashed and banged up in ways that we’ve never even seen before. But we knew that this was one of the battles that we would be fighting after starting with a $500 truck. In this episode, we tackle the cab, replacing the floor, rockers, cab corners, and a few lower pillar pieces. It sounds like a lot, but the proverbial eating of the elephant applies here as we tackled it methodically, one bite at a time.
Our hope is that those of you with a similarly rough old truck sitting in the garage, driveway, or barn might take some inspiration from us. Sure, we were at a professional hot rod shop with extremely talented help from our friend Ben Vaneperen, but maybe after seeing how we did it, the process won’t seem as overwhelming. This really can be done in the home garage with a good MIG welder, air compressor, some air tools, and a lot of patience.
Stay tuned for more sheet metal and bodywork as we continue to rework our old C10!
