Team Speedway Finishes 2022 Race Season with Multiple Wins and Performance Improvements
Team Speedway, sponsored by Speedway Motors, finished the 2022 race season with multiple wins and performance improvements. Returning to its competitive racing roots Speedway Motors began sponsoring Team Speedway in 2014 as a test bed for product performance.
For 70 years Speedway Motors has helped auto enthusiasts and racers build their best cars. Team Speedway regularly puts Speedway Motors parts to the test on the track running a ’70 Camaro, ’86 Corvette, ’65 Nova and ’67 Camaro. All of Team Speedway’s vehicles were built with performance in mind and to showcase Speedway Motors products on the track.
“Throughout 2022 the team competed in Goodguys Autocross series events across the country,” said Bill Schneider, Speedway Motors R&D Engineer and Team Speedway Manager. “We ended the season with two wins and came in as runner up at multiple events.”
Robby Unser brought home first place with the ’67 Camaro in the ProX class at Speedway Motors Heartland Nationals and Goodguys Columbus in the ProX shootout in July.
Unser is no stranger to racing, hailing from one of America’s most storied racing families. He boasts the 1987 World Hill Climb Champion and 1989 American Indy Car Series Champion titles and was named IRL Rookie of the Year in 1998. He has raced a wide range of classes at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, winning an unprecedented 9 times. Unser has also competed twice at the Indianapolis 500 and is Team Speedways seasoned Nova expert after testing out the sleeper car in 2014. In 2017 he was named Goodguys AutoCrosser of the Year.
Unser also came in as runner up in the ProX class at Goodguys Lone Star Nationals and wrapped up the season at Goodguys Speedway Motors Southwest Nationals in the Top 8 with the ’67 in the shootout. Driver Brian Martin also brought home 3rd place in the Pro class shootout in Scottsdale in the ’86 Corvette.
Debuted at Speedway Motors Heartland Nationals Martin has been testing the ’86 Twin Turbo Corvette for Team Speedway throughout the year. The Corvette sports a 5.3 LS from a 2002 Chevy Tahoe, new Speedway Motors 66mm turbos, Wilwood Disc Brakes, Rev 9 wastegates, Rocket Racing Wheels & Holley EFI system. Before the upgrades the Corvette ran 159.77 mph with a Blueprint 454 and 186.64 mph this year with the twin turbo 5.3 LS competing and qualifying for the Pro class shootout.
This year the team also welcomed back two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr. back to the track running Team Speedway’s ’70 Camaro.
“We also participated in a number of other events across the country this year including LS Fest East and ECTA,” Schneider added.
At LS Fest East the team came in as runner up in the Vintage class with the '70 Camaro. At ECTA their land speed record was 182.70 mph in the circle track class with the Nascar and made it into the 200 mph club at 201.072 mph.
