Vintage Valentine's Day Card Decorations

There’s something about the car hobby; it’s an all-encompassing, in-your-blood, take over your free time (and your money) way of living that trickles into your everyday being. I love cars. And I love art. Where the two meet interests me, as I’ve filled my walls with pieces from my favorite artists. My heart is especially drawn to little colorful illustrations from the 50’s and 60’s in the form of children’s Valentine’s Day cards.

I started collecting car-related vintage Valentine’s Day cards a few years back. They’re sweet, cute, clever, pun-ey, and usually a snap-shot into the culture and mind-set of the time. They range from racing, to Model T’s, to hot rods, to pedal cars to soap box derby… all hobbies in which I take an interest. Sometimes, they come with cursive penciled on the back; To: Martha, From: Johnny. Adorable.

Supplies you’ll need:

• Ready-made frame
• Vintage V-Day card of choice
• Color paper

For this type of project, I’ll use a simple frame from a local craft store, and cut my own backing paper. When framing artwork, I tend to choose neutral colored matte, or in this case paper, to let the art stand on its own. But hey, this is a Valentine’s Day project, so go nuts.

If I find a neat vintage magazine ad I like, I’ll toss it into a frame too. I have a few frames with vintage car themed postcards for Easter and Christmas as well. It’s an easy way to decorate your home for any season!
