Tech Talk: Racing Shocks - Shock Dents
Here in his own shop, Kyle Vanover chats about how dents can affect oil and gas shocks.
Twin tubes or oil shocks, are filled with oil and have a gas bag with the same volume as the shaft. Dents on twin tubes normally won’t affect the inner tube, so the piston will still move freely.
In a monotube, or gas shock, the bottom portion is filled with oil and the divider piston is filled with nitrogen. Denting gas shocks usually can cause more problems than denting oil shocks. Without the protective inner tube, the piston is more susceptible to damage.
