Chevy created the small block 400 cubic inch v8 in 1970. It was an upgrade of the 350 small block featuring a whopping 4.125 bore and a 3.75” stroke. It didn’t take long for hot rod enthusiasts to find a way to put the 3.75” stroke crank into the 400’s little brother, the 350. From this, a whole new genre of small block was born; the venerable 383 stroker small block Chevy, featuring a 4.030 bore and a 3.75” stroke!
There are two reasons why the 383 stroker engine is one of the most popular hot rod engines ever built. First, it's affordable, which is always a factor if you've got to put together a budget for your project. Second, it's an easy build. Combine these two variables and you've got yourself one of the most popular choices among hot rodders and racers alike. In the old days, you had to do expensive crankshaft grinding to fit the 400 crank into a 350. Doing things like that are a thing of the past, and you can now buy a kit that will literally “drop in” your 350 block, giving you those magical cubes!
There are many ways to build a 383 stroker. The reality is that most people are simply unaware of the high quality crankshaft rotating assemblies available today. Whether you are trying to squeeze out your last bit of power or looking for an economical solution, you will find the right 383 stroker kit is available from Speedway Motors.
Speedway Motors offers 383 Chevy stroker kits in ultra high horsepower forged kits or in economical, strong, cast crank kits. Speedway Motors 383 stroker kits can be had with both 5.7" or 6" long rods, and are available for both pre 1987 two piece seal blocks or the later 87 and up 1 piece seal block. Forged 383 stroker kits are good for 500 plus horsepower and can endure RPM's in excess of 6500. Cast 383 stroker kits are great for the hot street, strip or oval track 400-500 horsepower range and should be limited to a maximum speed of 6500 rpm or less.
A perfectly balanced rotating assembly is a must for performance engines. You can build a monster engine but if the rotating assembly is not balanced properly it will vibrate excessively and never reach its maximum potential. It's important to get your 383 rotating assembly balanced when purchasing a 383 stroker kit. This will ensure that it is smooth and vibration free. Specific kits require specific balance options so be sure to purchase the correct balance option with your 383 stroker kit.
