Why Go Tubular on Your IMCA Spec Race Car’s Lower Control Arms
The standard IMCA Modified OEM frame rules allow a few select options, with the 68-72 Chevelle/GM A-Body being one of the most popular. Chassis builders often use complete Chevelle front frame kits, such as the front frame kit from AFCO to build or repair these race cars. Obviously, a 68-72 Chevelle front frame setup is going to require the use of 68-72 GM A-Body control arms.
The IMCA Modified rules currently state that these arms, or “lower A-frames” must be of an OEM-style stamped steel design for the IMCA Modified division. Common issues with these stamped steel lower control arms include durability (warping/flexing after just a few races, which affects geometry), more prone to crash damage, the current quality of the available stamped steel replacement control arms, and the actual availability of said control arms. Working directly with the IMCA staff we’ve been able to design a A-Body tubular steel lower control arm for this race class that the IMCA has reviewed and will allow as a “spec” control arm in the Modified class. This tubular lower control arm option will provide identical geometry and mounting with strong, repeatable use, race after race, with less chance of being damaged in a crash.
Made In House Right Here at Speedway Motors
IMCA officials came to Speedway Motors because they knew we had the capability of manufacturing a strong, repeatable product to their specifications in our 100,000 square foot machine shop. We’ve been manufacturing our own parts since 1952 and our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility allows us to build the IMCA’s new spec lower control arms to IMCA Modified rules, ensuring that you’ll pass tech and be ready to race each weekend. We start with laser cut and press bent 10-gauge steel for the spring bucket and inner structure. This inner structure is then welded via precision jig to cut and bent 1.250-inch DOM steel tubing with a .125-inch wall thickness to create a strong lower suspension arm that retains all OEM-spec lower control arm dimensions for IMCA rules. We even provide a suspension limit tab for your limit chain on the left side lower arm version! The assembled Chevelle tubular control arms are then given a long-lasting satin black powdercoat finish.
These new IMCA spec-legal lower GM A-Body control arms out of the box are ready to go on your IMCA Modified Chevelle frame with the simple addition of a standard K727 ball joint (or one of our rebuildable K727 ball joints), and steel front and rear control arm bushings. We offer an optional bolt-on shock mount for those that are running a standard 1/2-inch spherical rod end style racing shock on their modified dirt car.
Improve your race car’s chances in a wreck and rid your racing program of those weak stamped steel lower dirt modified lower control arms while abiding by the IMCA Modified rules with our new tubular steel IMCA-spec lower control arms.
