Make Your 1947-1953 Chevy Truck Safer by Relocating the Fuel Tank

Modern cars and trucks are overseen by dozens of engineers and safety advocates with 1,000s of hours of product testing (including those crash tests we all love to watch on YouTube) to ensure that these vehicles keep our families safe on today’s roads. However, things were different 60, 70, and even 80 years ago. Many vehicles from these time periods are downright unsafe at today’s road speeds and with the number of vehicles on the road at any one time today. A completely stock vehicle from the ’20s through the late ’60s is safest as a static museum display, relegated to parade use, or should be transported via a trailer if some concessions to safety aren’t willing to be made.

Updating braking, tires, and in some cases even performance to handle modern road speeds, are the norm, but for some vehicles, especially pickup trucks of the period, updating the fuel system is something to consider as well. Why? Well for starters most of these trucks used in-cabin fuel tanks. So, you’re either sitting on or in front of 15 plus gallons of fuel. I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t give us a warm and fuzzy driving down the road with everyone else around you on their cell phones going down the road. Relocating the fuel tank outside the passenger compartment would certainly be a top priority when updating a classic pickup truck and we offer several application specific truck bed fuel tank offerings to do just that.

Frame Specific Dimensions Ensures a Perfect Fit Under the Bed of Your Pickup

Moving the fuel tank to the rear of your pickup under the truck’s pickup box/bed floor provides several benefits. The most obvious of course is removing the liquid fuel storage from inside the passenger compartment where a ruptured tank, separated fuel line or filler hose in an accident can cover the occupants with highly flammable gasoline. Moving the fuel tank to the rear not only provides a higher level of safety but places a good bit of weight at the rear of the pickup, which aids in traction. On average you’re looking at roughly 100 pounds of weight with a full truck bed fuel tank. Relocating the fuel tank also provides a bit more cabin storage room, or space for audio gear, road trip tools, and so forth.

We have designed our under bed aluminum fuel tanks to mount between the frame rails for a perfect fit behind the rear axle assembly. This is not a universal fuel tank requiring modification to fit your truck. The 38-inch wide truck bed gas tank is built from .090-inch thick aluminum sheet and TIG welded for a strong, yet light assembly. An internal full height baffle reduces fuel slosh and keeps the pickup tube immersed in fuel. We provide generous 3-inch wide and 10-inch long mounting flanges made from 1/8-inch aluminum on each end (for a total width of 44 inches) of our aluminum fuel tank that fit within your truck’s frame rails. Final placement is directed via the factory rear crossmember and all you must do is drill your own mounting holes and bolt the tank in (hardware not supplied).

Available For Carbureted or EFI applications in Bare Tank or Full Kit Versions

As you improve your classic pickup with things like replacement gauges and even fuel injection, a truck bed gas tank such as our under bed aluminum fuel tank will certainly help with these upgrades as well. Using a standard 5-bolt fuel level sender mounting hole with 10-24 threads, you can install any compatible fuel level sender for your new instruments. Or, if you wish to keep the original fuel level gauge you can order our 5-bolt fuel sending unit and our fuel level interface module so that your stock gauge will work properly.

Our carbureted truck bed fuel tank features an AN6 pickup fitting with a 1/4-inch NPT female port for your tank vent. The vent fitting may also be used for a fuel return line for carbureted applications using an electric fuel pump and regulator, or for a frame rail mounted EFI pump, but a vented fuel filler cap will be required. The 1-1/2-inch diameter filler neck uses standard filler neck hose and allows you to install your choice of fuel filler cap/door in the floor of your truck’s bed. A complete carbureted fuel tank kit is available as well, which includes fuel filler assembly, filler neck hose, sending unit, and more.

For fuel injection retrofits we offer an EFI ready tank and an EFI ready tank kit version with fuel pump module and everything else you need to install. So, whether you’re running a carb or the latest EFI system in your classic 47-53 Chevy truck, we have the Chevy truck gas tank retrofit for you to keep you safe and moving down the road.

Overall Assessment

The product, likely an aluminum fuel tank, is described by customers as high-quality, nicely constructed, easy to install, and a good fit, particularly for older model Chevy trucks. Customers were pleased with its low-profile design and found it fit well under truck beds. This fuel tank outshines competitors due to its durability, easy installation, and fit. Some users had to modify their frames to accommodate the tank, an issue not signposted in the product description. Necessary modifications included realigning the sending unit to line up screw holes, wider outer mounts needing trimming, and the addition of return line fittings for fuel injection systems. Attention to bung centering and better baffling would improve the product, particularly for fuel injected vehicles as poor baffling led to fuel sloshing and starvation. Despite a couple of instances of poor threading on pick-up tubes, customers would still recommend the product.

1947-53 Under-bed Aluminum Fuel Tank

Nice high quality tank. It installs easily. I modified the tank with another "bung" to house a return line for the EFI system I was installing at the same time.

Aluminum Under Bed Aluminum Fuel tank for 1952 Chevy truck

Good quality. Good fitment under the bed. Extremely poor baffling. Prepare for wild sloshing and fuel starvation. The recommended fuel level sender shows empty when I burn through about 10 gallons. No provision for a fuel return line. A fair tank for low performance/carburetor needs. Not good for a daily driver with fuel injection. I'll have to replace this with something baffled and with a better fuel level sender.

There should be something in the description that indicates it will NOT fit a stock frame.

Great tank, will fit nice in my application (37 Chevy truck) My only things to note. No return line fitting for fuel injection applications And the screws holes for the sending unit are 8-32 but the hardware with the universal sending unit is 10-32. Holes all line up one I reclocked the sending unit but had to get hardware

If needed I would purchase again.

Looks great mounted between the frame rails however the outer mounts were just slightly a little to wide and had to be trimmed a bit to slide it in. No big deal though. Kind of expect a little glitch now and then when doing a frame up restoration.

Nice quality tank. It fit perfectly between the frame rails as promised. However the rear rail supports are welded up higher in a different plane. It would have been better to have them at the same height as the side flanges so they could easily add support from the rear crossmember.
