Make Your 1947-1953 Chevy Truck Safer by Relocating the Fuel Tank
Modern cars and trucks are overseen by dozens of engineers and safety advocates with 1,000s of hours of product testing (including those crash tests we all love to watch on YouTube) to ensure that these vehicles keep our families safe on today’s roads. However, things were different 60, 70, and even 80 years ago. Many vehicles from these time periods are downright unsafe at today’s road speeds and with the number of vehicles on the road at any one time today. A completely stock vehicle from the ’20s through the late ’60s is safest as a static museum display, relegated to parade use, or should be transported via a trailer if some concessions to safety aren’t willing to be made.
Updating braking, tires, and in some cases even performance to handle modern road speeds, are the norm, but for some vehicles, especially pickup trucks of the period, updating the fuel system is something to consider as well. Why? Well for starters most of these trucks used in-cabin fuel tanks. So, you’re either sitting on or in front of 15 plus gallons of fuel. I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t give us a warm and fuzzy driving down the road with everyone else around you on their cell phones going down the road. Relocating the fuel tank outside the passenger compartment would certainly be a top priority when updating a classic pickup truck and we offer several application specific truck bed fuel tank offerings to do just that.
Frame Specific Dimensions Ensures a Perfect Fit Under the Bed of Your Pickup
Moving the fuel tank to the rear of your pickup under the truck’s pickup box/bed floor provides several benefits. The most obvious of course is removing the liquid fuel storage from inside the passenger compartment where a ruptured tank, separated fuel line or filler hose in an accident can cover the occupants with highly flammable gasoline. Moving the fuel tank to the rear not only provides a higher level of safety but places a good bit of weight at the rear of the pickup, which aids in traction. On average you’re looking at roughly 100 pounds of weight with a full truck bed fuel tank. Relocating the fuel tank also provides a bit more cabin storage room, or space for audio gear, road trip tools, and so forth.
We have designed our under bed aluminum fuel tanks to mount between the frame rails for a perfect fit behind the rear axle assembly. This is not a universal fuel tank requiring modification to fit your truck. The 38-inch wide truck bed gas tank is built from .090-inch thick aluminum sheet and TIG welded for a strong, yet light assembly. An internal full height baffle reduces fuel slosh and keeps the pickup tube immersed in fuel. We provide generous 3-inch wide and 10-inch long mounting flanges made from 1/8-inch aluminum on each end (for a total width of 44 inches) of our aluminum fuel tank that fit within your truck’s frame rails. Final placement is directed via the factory rear crossmember and all you must do is drill your own mounting holes and bolt the tank in (hardware not supplied).
Available For Carbureted or EFI applications in Bare Tank or Full Kit Versions
As you improve your classic pickup with things like replacement gauges and even fuel injection, a truck bed gas tank such as our under bed aluminum fuel tank will certainly help with these upgrades as well. The kit supplied 5-bolt fuel level sender features 240 ohms empty, 33 ohms full resistance values, which are common to many aftermarket fuel level gauges. If your aftermarket gauges use a different resistance value or you wish to keep the original fuel level gauge you can order our fuel level interface module so that your stock or other aftermarket gauge will work properly.
Our carbureted truck bed fuel tank kit features an AN6 pickup fitting with a 1/4-inch NPT female port for the included tank vent/rollover valve. The vent fitting may also be used for a fuel return line for carbureted applications using an electric fuel pump and regulator, or for a frame rail mounted EFI pump, but a vented fuel filler cap will be required. The 1-1/2-inch diameter filler neck uses the standard filler neck hose that is included in the kit to connect to our billet pop-up gas fill (also included) to mount in the bed floor of your truck.
For fuel injection retrofits we offer an EFI ready tank and an EFI ready tank kit version with fuel pump module and everything else you need to install. So, whether you’re running a carb or the latest EFI system in your classic 47-53 Chevy truck, we have the Chevy truck gas tank retrofit for you to keep you safe and moving down the road.

Customers positively review our fuel tank kit for classic GMC and Chevy trucks, affirming its perfect fit and easy installation process. They appreciate the tank's high-quality and straight-forward fitting process, which only required drilling a few holes and running a fuel line. Some users even made personalized modifications to increase convenience. However, for some, the 2" offset of the filler neck from the center of the tank was a minor issue. Still, most customers recommend the kit, praising it for being a good value for money and its satisfying, professional appearance once installed.

Safe alternative to fuel in the cab
Installing in 50 chevy truck with 4 link suspension, good quality materials, it comes with all parts necessary for fuel in and fuel out of tank, ample hand room on sides for drilling for bolts or screws, add a good quality rubber mounts for frame flex, I recommend removing rear frame support to slide into position otherwise you will have to trim side mounts (don't recommend that) fits perfectly!!

Make sure this will fit the way you want
I ordered this tank for my 1950 Chevy p/u. The only problem I had with this tank is that the filler neck is about 2" offset from the center of the tank. That means that the filler neck will be 2" offset from the center of the truck bed. Other than looking odd, it also means that the hole for the filler neck in the truck bed will have to go through one of the metal bed strips. Not good. I tried turning it 180 degrees, but it would have hit the strip on the opposite side of the same center bed board. I returned this tank.

Building a 1952 GMC truck and always wanted to remove the fuel tank and put under the truck bed, did a little research and seen your kit online, pretty straight forward, once you remove spare tire mount, fits perfectly, just need to drill a few holes and run fuel line, money well spent, highly recommend

This fuel tank fit exactly as expected. One of the things I did was to modify on my chassis some threaded plates that I welded onto the frame flange so there weren't blind nuts holding the tank on in order to remove the tank easily in the event of any unexpected issues in the future.
