Speedway Motors 91511655 Details

Speedway Motors now offers a reproduction version of one of the most popular carburetors ever used, the original Stromberg 97! Original equipment on 30s and 40s cars and trucks, the Stromberg 97 has long been favored by flathead hot rodders and racers who realized the performance qualities of this timeless fuel supplier.

There have been numerous attempts to reproduce this unit, with little success. "Speedy" Bill Smith of Speedway Motors in Lincoln, Nebraska, took on the challenge to make a great product even better. The 9 Super 7® Carb brings this reproduction of the original Stromberg 97 2 barrel carb into the 21st Century!

Speedway Motors has incorporated all of the improvements shown above while maintaining the carburetors original look. Features such as the choke assembly, accelerator pump, main jets and cosmetics have all been faithfully retained. Additionally, each carburetor is individually flow tested and inspected for leaks. Perfection is the result!

Aesthetically, the 9 Super 7® is nearly identical to the stock unit, minus the large 97 logo that appeared on the side and the patent numbers found on the float bowl area. Upgraded internal parts include; the float, needle, and seat. Jetting and power valve settings remain as they were for the original 97 carbs as well as the cfm and vacuum specs.

The other similarity that the 9 Super 7® shares with the original 97 is the setup and tuning necessary to yield a well-running machine. While perhaps not as simple as bolting on a single four-barrel, the 9 Super 7® makes setting up a multiple carburetor induction system easier than when Strombergs were available new. All thats required is an intake, a linkage system, a Uni-Syn syncing tool, and a little patience. Be sure to include the Secondary 9 Super 7® when installing multi-carb setups. Our 3 Carb kits come with one primary carburetor and two secondary carburetors while the 2 Carb kits are both primary carbs. See ourMultiple Carburetor Tech Tipfor more information on using the 9 Super 7® in a 2x2 or 3x2 carb set-up.

On the primary 9 Super 7® carb the throttle shaft extends from carb body .983" and has the hole on the end to pin the linkage. There is a brass sleeve that the throttle shaft rotates in that extends from the carb body .400 and this leaves the useable throttle shaft length of .583. There is sufficient room for progressive linkage and the manual throttle linkage that rotates over the sleeve.

  • All-new tooling for crisp, flawless castings
  • New aluminum base assembly allows for cooler fuel temps and better fuel efficiency as compared to the original cast iron design
  • Stainless steel screws and hardware
  • Choke assembly, accelerator pump, and jets have all been faithfully retained and accept standard Stromberg parts
  • Features original Stromberg 0.97" venturi diameter
  • Modern Nitrophyl float and Neoprene gaskets
  • Original troublesome needle and seat replaced by a Grose-style fuel inlet valve to better cope with higher fuel pressures and improved high speed running
  • Will not stick or dribble like the oldViton-tipped needle and seat setups
  • Grose-style jet valve wont corrode in modern fuel, something the original needle and seat units cant do
  • Comes with a No. 65 power valve and 0.045" main jets, identical to the stock 97
  • Extended brass throttle shaft to simplify multi-carb linkage

Note: Not recommended for use with Ethanol fuels. These are not compatible with E85

roadster runs right, finally.

Replaced my holley 2100 with the new speedy/super 7. fired right up after I modified the throttle and choke cable ends to fit . the carb proved to be too much for the 2 liter pinto motor so I ordered the 35 jets and that seems to be enough. also to use the vacuum advance on the pinto motor I had to drill and thread a fitting in the barrel. I live at 4100 feet and needed smaller jets.

Works great AFTER I repaired the leaks

Carb was recommended to me by friend for my stock 1934 Ford. This carb connects up to the stock Ford linkage easily except for the hand throttle. The throttle shaft is there, but no fitting is included on the carb and all Speedway has is an available $10, really ugly accessory fitting that still needs more parts to work. The problem is that the diameter of the throttle shaft on this carb is larger than the stock 97. However, with a little drilling (a round file will also work), the stock Stromberg hand throttle fitting off of a real 97 is usable on this reproduction carb. Then use the stock spring from your 97 as a spacer to make up for the smaller diameter on the rest of the throttle shaft. Place a small washer on the shaft between the fitting and the carb, then a cotter pin goes right into the existing holes. After this modification, the stock Ford hand throttle linkage also connects right up. The main problem that I had with this carb is that it leaked from all 3 of the fitting plugs on the bottom front. They use cheap hard plastic washers that don't seal. I was going to send the carb back, but first I tried Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket (Part No. 3H) and then tightened the screws real tight. That worked and it hasn't leaked since.

Bought two of these. I was happy with the prompt delivery because it arrived a couple hours before a show I wanted to attend. Did a quick install and it tan well enough to get to the show. On the way home noticed fuel smell and the car started to die. Stopped and found fuel coming out of the accelerator pump rod hole. Luckily I have a fuel pump cut off switch and was able to limp home. When I pulled in the driveway I suddenly lost throttle. Opened the hood to find the ball that connects the linkage to the carb had broken. Speedway was great and processed the return and got me a new one sent out. Got the new one installed and took it out for a ride. Once the car was warmed up it would die at idle. Checked and sure enough fuel dumping from accelerator rod hole. Electric fuel pump was set and verified at 2psi. Happened to have a spare Stromberg float switch so swapped that I. And found the same problem. Finally pulled the air horn to measure float height and found it to be 5/8 of an inch too high. The float hit the air horn before engaging the valve so fuel would never stop flowing. Seems to be running ok now that it is set. Bottom line it is an OK carb but DO NOT run without verifiing the float height. It is by no means ready to run out of the box

This carburetor was put on a 1937 ford truck 85 horse original motor. It has never started and ran this good! Had gasket in the box! Thank you! I wish it had a fast idle location to hook up to my truck. I could t take my old one off the original carb.

I bought this to replace the carb on my 40 Ford that had been sitting for 15 years. I replaced on entire fuel system from tank to carb and the 97 worked right out of the box. Adjusted the idle and fuel pressure and away we went.

Questions & Answers

Several have asked if these carbs can be drilled & tapped for a vacuum advance connection and most replies were yes. My question is this: On the backs of their bases are two raised circular cast marks that look like perfect spots to do this ( at least 1 of the 2 spots). They appear to be just above the throttle plates which I'm told is the correct method. Do you agree that this is an ideal place and could this work? I'm using a 6-two set-up with these & primary & secondary units.

I have a 1987 chevy 305 small block. I believe that it was originally equipped with throttle body fuel injection. Will the 9 Super 7 fit and work with the original intake manifold? Will the stock mechanical fuel pump supply enough flow and pressure for the 9 Super 7 to operate correctly.

I would like to hook up the stock throttle rod from the dash board on the left side of the carb. It enables the control of a fast idle without effecting the gas pedal. Do you have a way to do it?
