Improve Your Camaro or Nova’s Handling with a Bolt-On Front Suspension Upgrade

Your first gen Camaro/Firebird and third/fourth gen Nova utilize the same bolt-in front subframe assembly. This production piece uses traditional stamped steel upper and lower control arms fitted with a coil spring and a shock absorber for dampening. These pieces provided a factory compliant ride 50 plus years ago on bias-ply tires. However, today’s world is vastly different. We want our muscle cars to handle, fit big disc brakes, and wide sticky rubber. The stock stamped steel control arms can literally flex and fail under the cornering and braking forces applied to them, especially in a track environment and using modern performance rubber. The last thing any enthusiast wants is a part failure that could potentially cause damage to their pride and joy (or worse, cause injuries). Updating your GM pony car with Speedway Motors’ beefy Camaro tubular control arms, coilover shocks, and larger diameter front sway bar strengthens and enhances your muscle car’s ride while providing an adjustable front ride height.

Stamped Versus Tubular, The Benefits of Our Control Arms Are Obvious

As we stated earlier, a stamped steel control arm invites lots of sloppiness into your suspension due to flexing and twisting. While a stamping is indeed stronger than a flat sheet of metal, tubing is stronger still. So, when creating control arms from steel tubing you greatly increase the rigidity of the product, eliminating that slop from twisting and flexing. What does that mean for you behind the wheel? When it comes to tubular control arms vs stock you dive into a corner on Speedway tubular control arms your vehicle will go where you point it to. Getting down on that brake pedal for some extreme braking? Even your brakes will perform better since your control arms aren’t flexing under that hard braking input.

These are the best tubular control arms Camaro and Nova owners will find and feature a robust 1-5/8-inch diameter tubing for the lower arms and 1-1/8-inch tubing for the uppers, both finished in a show-quality gloss black powder coat. Wall thickness of our tubular steel control arms is .156-inch on the lowers and .125-inch on the uppers. Due to the thickness and material diameters these control arms do weigh more than the stock stamped control arms, but the small trade off in unsprung weight for the vast increase in strength makes it worth the small weight penalty. Due to the design of our tubular lower control arms, we highly recommend upgrading to disc brakes, as the drum brake backing plate interferes with the lower control arm and will require major surgery to retain your factory drum brakes up front.

We have fitted greaseable Delrin bushings and OE-spec ball joints to our tubular A arms with easy access grease fittings to make maintenance a breeze. Polyurethane bump stops are included for both upper and lower arm assemblies and these control arms are the perfect hosts for the included QA1 coilover shocks in this kit. Fitting coilover shocks requires removal of the OE-style shock mounting nuts that are welded to the lower control arm spring pocket, which is why we also provide our coilover reinforcement plates to ensure the coilover shock is properly supported in the Speedway Camaro control arms. New upper and lower control arm mounting hardware and a complete shim kit for alignment duties are included as well.

A Direct Bolt-In Coilover Shock That Provides Ride Height and Ride Quality Adjustments

The QA1 Pro Coil System coilovers we’re including in this front suspension kit are a single adjustable aluminum bodied shock designed specifically for this application. These are not universal coilover shocks with adapters for mounting in place of your F-body shocks. These ’67-’69 Camaro coilovers feature a threaded body with an aluminum adjuster, 18 valve adjustment positions via a simple twist of the knob at the base of the shock and utilize the factory shock mounting positions for bolt in ease. The included 450 lb/in powder coated coilover spring is specifically wound with a taper (2.50-inch ID at the base, 3.50-inch ID at the top) to allow the coilover spring to seat in the factory coil spring pocket in the frame. This places the vehicle’s weight in the factory spring pocket location, which is designed to fully support that weight, and not the upper shock mount like many universal coilover shock kits expect you to use.

The QA1 coilover shocks are completely revalveable and rebuildable by any QA1 authorized service location, providing many years of service for your Camaro, Firebird, or Nova. The included coilover spring is lighter and longer than the factory coil spring, providing more weight transfer upon acceleration. Add a QA1 thrust bearing and adjustment wrench kit to your order to make your ride height adjustments a breeze. The thrust bearings are placed between the adjuster collar and the bottom of the spring, taking the friction aspect out of the equation when turning the adjustment collar with the wrench.

Maximize Tire Contact Patch with Our Larger Diameter Front Sway Bar

The last piece of our front suspension upgrade for your 1967-1969 Camaro/Firebird or 1968-1974 Nova is arguably one of the most important, a larger diameter solid steel front sway bar. Unlike many sway bar options that are made from hollow steel tubing, a solid steel sway bar provides more strength in what is usually a smaller diameter package which makes installation easier. This is why hollow bars are larger in diameter to achieve the same torsional stiffness and are packaged on more modern cars where there’s room. Our sway bar is sized at 1.25-inches OD and includes polyurethane mounting and end link bushings with new zinc plated mounting brackets and end link hardware.

The factory sway bar diameter suited 1960s performance and the handling the stock suspension and bias ply tires of the time could handle, but with today’s LS swaps and often double the horsepower and rolling on big sticky tires, a beefy front sway bar like the one in this kit is a much needed upgrade. Designed to fit the stock front subframe, there are no modifications required to fit this larger diameter solid front sway bar on your F-body or X-body GM car. Pair it with our universal rear sway bar for slot car like handling that will turn your muscle car into track ready ride. Our complete front suspension package will help your muscle car gain increased handling, lower ride height, performance bushings with minimal deflection, and more, all without the cost of upgrading to an aftermarket subframe and the major work that entails.

This kit is a great value for the price. The ride is very firm, which i wanted, some may not like that. There is an adjustable knob on the coil overs if you prefer a softer ride. For a weight reference I have an aluminum LS1 engine and T56.. the sway bar is BEEFY compared to stock! Heads up install the sway bar before you get both lower arms on, you'll thank me later. This kit is very nice and organized, it doesn't have any instructions to setup the lower plate for the coil overs, which are inserted into the lower arm and you will need to provide yourself with longer bolts for it to reach. After the alignment I'm running about 6 degrees of caster and this car handles amazing now! My confidence for my car's ability to turn at higher speeds has raised significantly.
