A Nostalgic Look for Your Traditional Hot Rod Build

We take a lot of things for granted these days when building a hot rod. So many things that had to be sourced used or from other vehicles back in the heyday are now available as perfect modern copies. From body parts to interior, it is truly much easier to build a hot rod today in whatever style you desire.

A perfect example of this is the classic aluminum bomber seat. History is lost to who may have been the first to grab the seats from an old surplus WWII aircraft and bolt them into their car, but it was an extremely popular way to go back in the 1940s. The seats were lightweight (perfect for the burgeoning racing scene of the '40s), cheap, and looked pretty darn cool as well. Today, commonly referred to as "rat rod seats,"you can find recreations of classic aluminum bomber seats for sale in many styles and we offer a couple of great options for your build.

Traditional Looks with More Comfort

One thing vintage bomber seats were known for is that they did not usually provide a high level of comfort, even with the original bomber seat pads that came with them. Let us be real here, they were bare aluminum "butt buckets"designed to be as small and light as possible to fit in the cramped fuselages of military aircraft. We have taken that original design concept to a fully welded seat hand formed from .090-inch aluminum sheet and added a 20-degree layback seat angle with a one-piece curved shell to create more comfortable bomber seats for those long drives we all love to take in our hot rods.

With an overall height of 21 inches and a 16 inch inside width these Aluminum Hot Rod Bomber Seats will fit most enthusiasts and provide hours of comfort on the road. For additional comfort we offer drop in bomber seat cushions in our seat bottom cushion kit and a great looking black tweed cloth snap in bomber seat cover that not only look sharp but work together very well. A .590-inch tubular rolled edge adds strength to the seat along with classic looks.

Classic Bomber Appearance That Fits Almost Anywhere

The universal mounting ability of our Aluminum Hot Rod Bomber Seats means they will go into just about any vehicle project you have in mind. There are no mounting holes pre-drilled, so your mind is free to determine the best method for mounting. You can fabricate your own mounts, or direct bolt the seat to your sheetmetal. We also offer a slick set of universal bomber seat mounting brackets that you can bolt, rivet, or weld to these seats once you have determined the best mounting height and angle for your application. A set of basic seat risers is another option that may work for your application as well.

If you are looking for something a bit more retro, we offer a lightened version of our Aluminum Hot Rod Bomber Seat chock full of dimple-die holes. Lastly, for those with a knack for the DIY we have a more traditional aluminum bomber seat kit that you rivet together yourself. Pick up a pair of any of our Aluminum Hot Rod Bomber Seats for your hot rod build today and be ready for your next long haul.

Overall Assessment

Customers highly recommend these aluminum seats for their usability, material quality, and practicality in various car models, specifically gassers, drag cars, and hot rods. Users commend the easy installation, the improvement of leg and headroom, and the positive visual effect on their cars. The seats are also known for their good welding quality and reasonably priced. Some clients had to slightly adjust them for fitting issues, but overall, they are satisfied with the product for its ability to provide an old school or period-correct look that positively enhances the interior. Some customers suggested purchasing seat cushions for extra comfort. The seat's weight and comfortability have also been praised.

Great product, very fair price

I am modifying this seat to fit in a small British sports car by adding a headrest and a thigh extension, and adding brackets to allow it to mount to the existing sliding track in the car. Once the metalwork is done, it all be taken to an upholstery shop to add padding and cover in leather. This will gain me several inches of legroom over a stock seat.

Slightly wider than claimed

The seat is nicely made and looks good. Mine measure approximately 17 1/2" at their widest point so I will have to modify one extensively to get it to fit on my passenger side. The people who have problems with the optional seat pads burning or melting in the sun should look up "parabolic mirror" in a dictionary. What is going on is that the sun is being reflected and concentrated off the seat back onto a small area, much like when we used to use magnifying glasses to start fires when we were kids.

Seat is intended to be used in a replica of the XP87 Stingray Racer concept car. May need some slight modification to flatten the top but will be close to period correct.

The seats were installed in a Fiberfab 52 MG TD kit car. The car has a 2.5 front drop and a 1.5 rear drop. Tires are 135r15's front and 205 r16 15'd rear. The seats really added to the look I was going for!
