Make Your 1948-1960 Ford Truck Safer by Relocating the Fuel Tank
Modern cars and trucks are overseen by dozens of engineers and safety advocates with 1,000s of hours of product testing (including those crash tests we all love to watch on YouTube) to ensure that these vehicles keep our families safe on today’s roads. However, things were different 60, 70, and even 80 years ago. Many vehicles from these time periods are downright unsafe at today’s road speeds and with the number of vehicles on the road at any one time today. A completely stock vehicle from the ’20s through the late ’60s is safest as a static museum display, relegated to parade use, or should be transported via a trailer if some concessions to safety aren’t willing to be made.
Updating braking, tires, and in some cases even performance to handle modern road speeds, are the norm, but for some vehicles, especially pickup trucks of the period, updating the fuel system is something to consider as well. Why? Well for starters most of these trucks used in-cabin fuel tanks. So, you’re either sitting on or in front of 15 plus gallons of fuel. I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t give us a warm and fuzzy driving down the road with everyone else around you on their cell phones going down the road. Relocating the fuel tank outside the passenger compartment or from the driver’s side frame rail would certainly be a top priority when updating a classic pickup truck and we offer several application specific truck bed fuel tank offerings to do just that.
Frame Specific Dimensions Ensures a Perfect Fit Under the Bed of Your Pickup
Moving the fuel tank to the rear of your pickup under the truck’s pickup box/bed floor provides several benefits. The most obvious of course is removing the liquid fuel storage from just under the driver’s side of the passenger compartment (or inside the passenger compartment on 48-52 trucks) where a ruptured tank, separated fuel line or filler hose in an accident can quickly engulf the cab area with flames. Moving the fuel tank to the rear not only provides a higher level of safety but places a good bit of weight at the rear of the pickup, which aids in traction. On average you’re looking at roughly 100 pounds of weight with a full truck bed fuel tank. Relocating the fuel tank also provides room under the driver’s side cab area for running boards, rock sliders, custom exhaust, or to run your fuel and brake lines.
We have designed our under bed aluminum fuel tanks to mount between the frame rails for a perfect fit behind the rear axle assembly. This is not a universal fuel tank requiring modification to fit your truck. The 28-1/4-inch wide truck bed gas tank is built from .090-inch thick aluminum sheet and TIG welded for a strong, yet light assembly. An internal full height baffle reduces fuel slosh and keeps the pickup tube immersed in fuel. We provide generous 2-inch wide and 4-1/2-inch long mounting flanges made from 1/8-inch aluminum on each end (for a total width of 32-1/4 inches) of our aluminum fuel tank that fit within your truck’s frame rails. Final placement is directed via the factory rear frame rail angle and all you must do is drill your own mounting holes and bolt the tank in (hardware not supplied).
Available For Carbureted or EFI applications in Bare Tank or Full Kit Versions
As you improve your classic pickup with things like replacement gauges and even fuel injection, a truck bed gas tank such as our under bed aluminum fuel tank will certainly help with these upgrades as well. Using a standard 5-bolt fuel level sender mounting hole with 10-24 threads, you can install any compatible fuel level sender for your new instruments. Or, if you wish to keep the original fuel level gauge you can order our 5-bolt fuel sending unit and our fuel level interface module so that your stock gauge will work properly.
Our carbureted truck bed fuel tank features an AN6 pickup fitting with a 1/4-inch NPT female port for your tank vent. The vent fitting may also be used for a fuel return line for carbureted applications using an electric fuel pump and regulator, or for a frame rail mounted EFI pump, but a vented fuel filler cap will be required. The 1-1/2-inch diameter filler neck uses standard filler neck hose and allows you to install your choice of fuel filler cap/door in the floor of your truck’s bed. A complete carbureted fuel tank kit is available as well, which includes fuel filler assembly, filler neck hose, sending unit, and more.
For fuel injection retrofits we offer an EFI ready tank designed to work with our 255 lph submersible EFI fuel pump module. So, whether you’re running a carb or the latest EFI system in your classic 48-60 Ford truck, we have the Ford truck gas tank retrofit for you to keep you safe and moving down the road.

Customers highly recommend the product for its superior build quality and practicality. The product is praised for its flexibility and compatibility with a range of older make vehicles, ranking it higher than competitors. The tank, appreciated for its well-positioned brackets and fill neck, fits perfectly in different vehicles without needing removal of the bed, providing a showcase look under it. Emphasized as a remarkable investment, it is lightweight and easy to install. Although some users had minor issues with the tank, they found these manageable and were satisfied overall with its performance and fitting, making it worth the price. Its under-bed positioning and sturdy construction were frequently mentioned as standout features. Some users wished for a larger fill neck and centrally located filler neck hole, but these were not deal-breakers.

Some Quality Issues
Looked good out of the box but discovered some quality issues upon installation. First off the pick up tube had some teflon tape on the threads that was coming un-wound and didn't look like it was down in the threaded area at all. When I removed the fitting to re-install correctly I figured out why - the fitting was badly cross threaded, threads were pretty much trashed. Since I destroyed the shipping box already and this seems like a PITA to send back I cleaned them up the best I can, got a few turns that felt like they were holding and hope I never have to take it out again. Next off 3 of the 4 mounting tabs were not welded on straight at all, up to 3/8" off. Again something that will be easier to deal with than to send back. All in all this tank will probably work but for $400 for an aluminum box with some tabs and bosses welded on I shouldn't have to deal with these basic manufacturing errors.

If using a 4 link rear, be prepared to move the factory rear cross brace (normally behind where the original rear leaf spring is mounted). note: kit includes the vent tube. don't purchase it separately.

Mounted in the back of a 29 ford pickup. Nice look under the bed. Wish it had a bigger fill neck and choice of draw tube fitting but they were easy obstacles to handle.
Fit is great!

Before ordering, I was a bit concerned about the quality and fit of this tank, but I purchased it anyway and glad that I did !! I installed it in my '56 and found that it fit perfectly...without removing the bed. The brackets are very well positioned on the tank to fit the contour of the frame rails and the filler neck also locates well in the bed. You should put some instructions together....wouldn't be difficult and would help many potential customers.

I am using this tank to fit a 53 chev 3100 with a boxed frame, the filler neck hole opening would be more universal if it was located to a center position on the tank. Install just means I have to hang it lower to allow for an offset fill pipe.
