An Inexpensive Disc Brake Conversion for Serious Stopping Power

In the 60’s and early 70’s, drum brakes were generally considered to be just fine for safely halting a muscle car in traffic. Disc brakes were a luxurious, extra-cost option that often only ended up under performance packages like the Super Sport or Z/28. But as time has marched on, we’ve grown accustomed to our late models with electronically assisted disc brakes on all four corners that will stop on a dime. Meanwhile, a trip across town in that old drum brake equipped Chevelle, Nova, or Camaro is an exercise in constant vigilance and planning ahead for a panic stop. It’s almost enough to take the fun out of the drive.

It doesn’t take much to drastically improve on the 19th century design of those drum brakes, especially in the front. A simple, inexpensive front disc brake upgrade using OE-style components can make a night and day difference when compared to those old, fading drums. That’s where this kit fits in. While there are bigger, more trick brake kits out there, the Speedway Motors ’64-’74 GM Car Front Disc Brake Kits comes with everything you need to ditch the drums and add a disc kit to keep your GM A/F/X body car safe in modern traffic at a price that doesn’t break the piggy bank.

Complete Kit Bolts on To Stock Disc Brake Spindles

This brake kit comes complete with everything needed to complete the install. That means bearings, seals, brackets, hardware, 11” rotors with 5 on 4-3/4” bolt pattern, ’69-’77 GM calipers, pads, and hoses are all included, saving you all the trips to the parts store to hunt down the nickel and dime parts that can make an install like this a hassle.  It’s designed as a direct bolt on to stock disc brake spindles or Speedway Motors stock-style disc brake spindles, part #910-34900. If you’re converting from drum brakes, the original drum brake spindles require that the upper threaded boss be machined to remove approximately .610” and often the hole needs to be drilled and tapped deeper. To skip the hassle and make sure that it’s done right, we recommend purchasing these new disc brake spindles when performing this swap. If you’re after a dropped stance and improved handling, we recommend using our Speedway Motors G-Comp spindles with this brake kit or 91031958D with drilled and slotted rotors.

This kit fits 1964-72 GM A-Body, 1967-69 GM F-Body and 1968-74 X-Body using stock disc brake spindles, aftermarket disc brake spindles, or modified stock drum brake spindles.

We recommend using our brake booster/master cylinder combo, part # 910-31978 with this front disc brake kit. Stock single reservoir 4-wheel drum brake master cylinders don’t have the capacity to supply the proper amount of pressure for front disc brakes. This master and booster kit also includes an adjustable proportioning valve to offer adjustment of the rear line pressure, allowing you to balance the front and rear brakes.

Also note that this kit will NOT work with 14” diameter wheels. There’s just not enough room for these 11” rotors and OE calipers inside a 14” wheel, so 15” or larger wheels that were designed to work with disc brakes must be used.

Application

This kit fits 1964-72 GM A-Body, 1967-69 GM F-Body and 1968-74 X-Body using stock disc brake spindles, aftermarket disc brake spindles, or modified stock drum brake spindles. When converting from drum brakes, the original drum brake spindles require that the upper threaded boss be machined to remove approximately .610” and often the hole needs to be drilled and tapped deeper. Also note that non-Chevy A bodies like Cutlass, GTO, and Skylark sometimes have different sized holes in the spindles. In these cases we recommend new disc brake spindles, part #910-34900.

This disc brake kit allows you to use install '69-'72 11" GM midsize rotors and '69-'77 GM midsize calipers on your stock '64-'72 Chevelle disc brake spindles, or on Speedway Motors' new stock replacement spindles (Part number 91034900).

Perfect for existing disk rebuild

We used this kit to rebuild the front disc set up on a 72' Monte Carlo that had sat under a carport for over 10 years. The kit was complete and the service was fast. My 16 year old son and his buddy installed it with little supervision. One small bag of parts that I could have gotten at the parts store were missing but Speedway quickly replaced them no problem.

Does not work on some applications

Converting drum to disk on my 1965 Chevy Malibu. Understood that boss needed to be machined, but what was not provided was the two correct sized bolts that hold bottom caliper mount and dust cover to spindle. Bolts provided were a bit big. This would require spindle and steering arm to be drilled to accommodate for bigger bolt. Also top bolt mounting caliper and dust cover to spindle was never mentioned on instructions. This bolt will not fit into stock drum brake spindle without drilling larger and tapping that top hole.

This was a good bargain for what you get. Some instructions would have been nice. There were small parts left over that I still don't know where they go, i.e. crush washers and 2 small black clips.

How much will this widen the track width? I've seen on your other kits that it widens 3/8 of an inch. Is the 3/8 overall? Or 3/8 per side?

I have a 1969 Chevy Nova with 4 wheel manual drum brakes. I want front discs, but I don't want power. My cam doesn't make enough vacuum to have power brakes and I don't want to buy anymore parts to make it work. Can I just add the disc brake kit and be done with it?
