Why Convert to Mustang II Suspension?
It has been over 50 years since hot rodders stumbled across the second-generation Mustang’s independent front suspension (IFS) crossmember and its compact design that would fit easily in pre-war hot rods. The famed 1974-1978 Mustang II front end has been swapped into countless thousands of hot rods and muscle cars over the decades due to its compact size, ease of alignment, and the ability to upgrade to disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering all at once. However, the supply of original Mustang II suspension crossmembers you would find in a salvage yard have long dried up. Thankfully, the aftermarket, including Speedway Motors, has answered enthusiast’s needs with brand new Mustang II crossmembers, both universal and application specific, to maintain the feasibility of Mustang II IFS swaps.
Of course, a Mustang II suspension bolt-in or weld-in crossmember is only part of the solution. Once you have your crossmember installed in your hot rod, muscle car, or classic truck you’ll need Mustang II front end kit specific suspension components, including control arms, springs, shocks, and more to complete the Mustang 2 front suspension installation. We make things easy for your Mustang II front suspension project by offering complete Mustang II IFS kit systems designed to work together to provide the best handling for your intended purpose and budget. From stock-type control arms and OEM-level springs and shocks to beefy tubular control arms, adjustable coilover shocks, and more, we offer the perfect Mustang 2 front end conversion kit you’re after.
Mustang II Control Arms Are Your Mustang II Suspension Build’s Starting Point
For those looking for entry level handling needs, the stock stamped steel upper and lower control arms will get the job done, allowing you to save your build budget for other needs. However, if you’re looking for better handling, appearance, and eliminating the OEM lower control arm strut rod support for additional tire clearance, we have put together a Mustang II IFS kit with our tubular steel upper and lower control arms with rubber bushings. These control arms are designed to use an air spring and shock absorber and are 5/8-inch narrower than standard tubular arms, reducing overall track width by 1-1/4-inches and helping to tuck your front wheels into the fenders more without the expense of custom wheels.
For our air spring kits, we provide bolt in upper mount adapters that convert the stock coil spring upper mount for air spring use. Installation will require the use of an air management system to control the air spring pressure and ride height. Black painted fixed rate twin tube gas shocks are included and require welding of the upper shock mount to the chassis. Expect about up to a 6-inch drop with the included kit air springs and 2-inch drop height spindle. The rest of the kit features 11-inch disc brakes, forged 2-inch drop height spindles, and your choice of manual or power rack-and-pinion steering assembly.
Spindles, Brakes, and Steering Round Out Your Mustang II IFS Kit
Our forged and heat-treated spindles provide a strong foundation for your Mustang II’s brakes, wheels, and tires versus cast spindles. The spindle features a 2-inch drop height that retains factory suspension geometry and is fully machined for use with stock inner and outer wheel bearings, OEM-spec brake caliper (or caliper adapter bracket) and maintains the factory 7-degree ball joint and tie-rod end taper for true bolt on ease.
These spindles work together with the included Wilwood performance 11-inch disc brake kit that features dual bolt Ford/GM pattern aluminum hubs, vented disc brake rotors and Dynalite 4-piston calipers. We even include the brake pads. You will, however, need to adapt the Wilwood caliper’s 1/8-27 NPT fluid ports to AN3 brake hose. We suggest making things easy for your Mustang II install via one of Wilwood’s brake hose kits that include adapters, AN 3 braided brake hoses, and more to connect to your frame’s hard line.
Obviously, one of the key benefits of converting to a Mustang 2 front suspension is the upgrade to the precise control of rack-and-pinion steering from your old OEM frame mounted steering gear box. Rack-and-pinion steering provides better road feel, quicker turn-in, lower weight, and better packaging for engine swaps. While some prefer the simplicity of a manual rack for its bolt-in and go ability, we don’t force you to do so, as you have the option of either a manual rack or a power rack, both built with all new housing and internal components, and includes mounting bushings and outer tie-rod ends to connect your rack of choice to your spindles (tie rod extensions recommended for wide width applications). Simply pick up the necessary steering shafts and joints to connect the rack to your steering column.
Our Mustang II IFS kit and crossmember kit options make it easy to upgrade your project’s straight axle or early IFS with standard steering box to make room for engine swaps, better ride and handling, improved braking, and more. DIY-type installation can be accomplished easily in the home garage with the right tools and a competent welder, providing you with years of safer and more predictable driving that will make it fun to be behind the wheel of your ride once again.

WARNING: DRIVING A LOWERED VEHICLE COULD BE DANGEROUS AND COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR SUSPENSION
The original intent of the air spring was to provide a very smooth ride. It was not designed to provide an adjustable ride height. You can not drive the vehicle at any ride height you select.
All suspension systems are designed to operate at a specific midpoint position, with provisions for suspension travel. The Mustang II suspension is no exception. It has a specific mid-point position which is when the lower control arms are level. The suspension must be in this position to provide full suspension travel and correct geometry action.
In this type of suspension the shock is normally the bottom out device. When the vehicle is lowered the shocks compression and extension limits change and the shocks will bottom out or the ball joints could pinch when it is lowered. The air ride suspension is only designed to lower your vehicle while it is parked. If you attempt to drive a vehicle in the lowered position it could be dangerous and will cause damage to your vehicle. This could result in broken control arms, shocks and ball joints.

It would be nice to have the option to choose brake size, my kit is going on a '58 Apache shot bed, LS swapped 750 HP, the kit comes with Wilwood 11" rotors, non-vented, would have liked the option to upgrade to 13"+ rotors for my application.

I would buy again, now that I now what to look for.

Top hats were over ground. It made two different angles side to side. 6 degrees on the passenger side, 3 degrees on driver side. I'm just hoping the anti dive survived the grinding process. Otherwise a good product.

I have Part # 91034221 and the top hat is off set to the center of the spring. Which way is the offset to go, to the inside, outside front or back. i have tried them all and it does not seem to matter much. And I did not get the thick 7/16 washers to bolt down the top. Do they come in the kit normally?
