Convert Your Existing Mustang II Front Suspension to Coilovers with Zero Modifications
Many Mustang II early adopters used an actual front suspension crossmember from the Mustang II, or used an aftermarket budget or lower cost Mustang II IFS kit that usually end up with an OE-style fixed rate coil spring and basic shock absorber combo fitted to their Mustang II front suspension. This style of Mustang II front end used the stock stamped steel control arms. While this worked, it did not allow for ride height adjustment and finding the correct spring rate for your vehicle’s weight was a challenge. Upgrading to a coilover shock system, which provides an easy solution to ride height adjustments, low cost spring rate changes, and better handling, is often the preferred solution.
Retrofitting Mustang 2 front coilovers to the stock Mustang II front suspension can be challenging, as a true coilover shock utilizes a threaded shock body that uses a fixed upper spring seat and an adjustable lower spring seat, eliminating the upper spring pocket on the Mustang II frame or welded component of a Mustang II suspension kit. This design is what gives the coilover shock its ability to easily adjust ride height and swap out spring rates depending upon front vehicle weight and application needs.
To solve this issue, we have created an effective, conversion kit to install Mustang II coilovers that requires no cutting, grinding, or welding and is a true bolt-in to stock or aftermarket Mustang II IFS systems at a terrific value. This Mustang II coilover shock retrofit will work with both stock stamped lower arms and aftermarket tubular lower control arms (both with and without strut rod systems). These are not universal coilovers that require modification to work on your Mustang II front suspension.
Quality Materials in An Easy to Assemble Kit
Our Mustang 2 coilovers are a bolt in retrofit with zero modifications while increasing overall suspension travel. Beginning with an AFCO black steel monotube shock absorber with a fixed valve rate, the correct hardware to make the shock a bolt-in retrofit is added along with polyurethane mounting bushings.
We include the correct length 7/16-inch diameter through bolt for use with stock stamped steel lower control arms or Mustang II tubular lower control arms for use with strut rods, but the shock absorber will easily mount to aftermarket tubular lower A-arms with the 1/2-inch diameter hardware that is included with the control arm itself thanks to the lower bushing design.
The kit includes a slip fit threaded sleeve and retainer that converts the AFCO steel body Mustang II shocks into a coilover-style shock with threaded body. Included with the sleeve is a black anodized lower spring perch that is threaded to make ride height adjustments, along with a black anodized locking collar to maintain your ride height setting.
However, the really trick part of this conversion is our unique coilover springs. These are wound from premium chrome silicon spring material and available in four spring rates (375, 500, 600, and 700 lb/in rates for various front weights/engine combinations).
We recommend our lightest 375 lb/in springs for vehicles like Model As and Ts, while the 500 and 600 lb/in springs are more suitable for heavier pre-war coupes and sedans. Heavier cars like 60s muscle cars might need to use our 700 lb/in springs depending upon engine size and accessories (AC, power steering, etc.). It is best to weigh your front frame section, engine, and accessories to determine final front suspension weight and choose your spring accordingly.
The springs are tapered so that the upper spring diameter matches the stock Mustang II upper spring seat cup/pocket, yet the bottom of the spring necks down to a standard 2-1/2-inch ID to fit a standard coilover shock dimension, thus allowing a longer spring to fit in place for reduced spring rates and a better ride. Utilizing the factory upper spring pocket also places the spring’s load into the frame, as designed by Ford, versus a single shock mount like most aftermarket coilover conversion shocks, which was not designed to carry the vehicle's front weight and can lead to failure of the upper shock mount in extreme cases. Lastly, the springs are chrome plated to match the coilover shock body and hardware for that show winning appearance.
Direct Fit to Your Mustang II IFS With No Special Tools or Welding
Upgrading to our Mustang II coilovers couldn’t be easier. All you need to do is:
- Remove your original shock absorber and coil spring
- Fit the assembled coilover shock and spring into place
- Secure with the included mounting hardware
We suggest using our Mustang II upper spring isolators to eliminate metal on metal contact between the spring and the frame pocket that could create squeaks or noise during suspension movement if your original ones are damaged or missing.
Once installed thread the coilover spring adjusters up or down to adjust your ride height (our coilover spanner wrench makes the job easy) and even out the left and ride side of your front end and lock the adjustment down and you’re ready to hit the road with the perfect ride height and a great riding shock and spring package.
This complete kit maximizes your project dollars and includes two black shocks, coilover conversion mounting kit, and two chrome coil springs in your choice of spring rate. There's nothing else to buy to retrofit this great coilover kit to your Mustang II front suspension system. While the fixed valving we have specified in this kit works well for most applications, if you are looking for a similar kit with adjustable shock valving, we do offer adjustable coilover shocks in our adjustable Mustang II coilovers using QA1 single adjustable (for rebound) shocks.
Whichever direction you choose to go in, be it our fixed rate value coilover system or the QA1 adjustable coilovers, your Mustang II equipped ride is going to handle whatever roads you throw at it like a pro!
NOTE: Not recommended for front axle weights more than 1,900 lbs.

My shocks came pre-assembled. I "assumed" they were installed correctly..... I installed the first one (after changing the lower mount to a QAI T-Bar style). Went in fine. The second side went in the same.... Until I started setting the height on the spring.... I car violently dropped an inch. After pulling it back out and apart. The threaded sleeve was installed upside down. After fixing it and getting it back in, I tore apart the first one just to check.... It was also installed upside down. Thankfully I didn't drive it. So far they seem nice, once I put some miles on the car, I'll update the review.

When I received the kit, the bump stops and upper shock mounting isolators were already installed. This being the case, I proceeded to install them. I immediately found that the shock spring adjustment sleeve pushed the lower retaining wire ring off the shock when spring tension was applied. I tried twice and then decided to take the sleeve off of the shock to investigate. I discovered that the sleeve was installed upside down. When properly installed, the sleeve acts to keep the retaining ring "captive" by sliding over the lower ring (the inside was machined with a slight taper on one end only) so it must be installed correctly. This required the removal of the bump stop from the shock shaft to remove the adjustment sleeve. Once all was in the correct orientation. the installation was a snap. These are designed for the later model Mustang II lower control arms ('74-'78). They will not work on the early design with the small diameter hole .
