What Is a Dry Sump Oil System?

Traditional wet sump oil systems utilize an oil pan that stores the engine’s oil directly within the engine’s crankcase area. The wet sump oil system uses an engine driven oil pump with a submerged oil pump pickup within the oil pan itself. From a packaging standpoint and cost it checks all the boxes for not only OEMs but for traditional enthusiasts for street and mild performance use. However, wet sump oil systems are far from perfect. Since your five to seven quarts of engine oil is directly beneath the reciprocating assembly, the spinning crankshaft and connecting rods can aerate the oil, and having air in your pressurized oiling system is not a good thing! Additionally, under high G-loads such as accelerating, braking, and cornering, the oil pump pickup can become uncovered in a wet sump oil system, starving the engine of oil, often during high rpm use. Also, not a good thing! The answer is to convert to a dry sump oil system where most of the engine’s oil is stored in a remote oil tank and the oil pump is external to the engine and scavenges the engine’s oil from the oil pan, reducing aeration and windage losses.

Convert Your LS Engine to Dry Sump Oiling with a True Bolt-On Dry Sump Pump

Traditional multi-stage dry sump oil pumps often require custom bracket fabrication, or off-the-shelf brackets for a small-block Chevy or other engine to be modified or adapted to the LS engine block. Working with a billet dry sump pump vendor we’ve spec’d a quality 4-stage dry sump pump (three scavenge stages and one pressure stage) that features an adjustable pressure relief valve to control oil pressure needs and then CAD designed direct fit CNC machined aluminum brackets to direct mount the dry sump pump to any Gen 3 or Gen 4 LS engine. The pump and brackets are compatible with popular LS applications including LS1, LS2, LS3, LQ4 and 5.3 engines, but will not will not work with LS4, LS7, LS9, and LSA applications.

The pump features three AN12 scavenge inlets, one AN16 scavenge outlet, one AN10 pressure feed, and one AN12 reservoir inlet. The billet pump comes with an anodized finish, and the mounting brackets set the pump location for use with GM’s LS mid-mount accessory drive spacing. Simply add a oil pump pulley, an 8mm HTD belt, and compatible crank damper to drive the pump. The dry sump pump is compatible with optional fuel pump drive kits from Hilborn, Waterman, and others as well. The dry sump pump uses GM's mid-mount accessory drive spacing (98-02 F-Body and GTO) and is compatible with mid-mount accessory drive systems, including those with an AC compressor, allowing an LS dry sump with AC setup for those wishing to retain their AC system for drag and drive events or other street use.

Add A Dry Sump LS Oil Pan, AN Hose and Fittings to Complete Your Dry Sump Conversion

Of course, the pump is just the beginning of building out your LS dry sump conversion. A dedicated dry sump LS oil pan is required for the dry sump pump to properly scavenge the engine’s oil away from the reciprocating assembly quickly. We offer a direct fit aluminum dry sump LS oil pan that features three AN12 scavenge outlets for quick and efficient oil removal from the engine along with an AN10 pressure inlet to connect to the pressure stage of the dry sump oil pump.

Besides the dry sump specific oil pan, you’ll need to source the aforementioned dry sump oil tank, as well as your choice of remote oil filter mount.  Additionally, you will need to determine the proper AN fittings and hose for your oil tank and filter inlet/outlet along with your dry sump pump to oil pan connections once you’ve mocked everything up and have confirmed mounting location of your oil tank and remote filter. If you want to make things a bit simpler for yourself, we suggest considering our complete LS dry sump kit, which includes everything but the oil tank and remote filter solution.
