What Is a Dry Sump Oil System?

Traditional wet sump oil systems utilize an oil pan that stores the engine’s oil directly within the engine’s crankcase area. The wet sump oil system uses an engine driven oil pump with a submerged oil pump pickup within the oil pan itself. From a packaging standpoint and cost it checks all the boxes for not only OEMs but for traditional enthusiasts for street and mild performance use. However, wet sump oil systems are far from perfect. Since your five to seven quarts of engine oil is directly beneath the reciprocating assembly, the spinning crankshaft and connecting rods can aerate the oil, and having air in your pressurized oiling system is not a good thing!

Additionally, under high G-loads such as accelerating, braking, and cornering, the oil pump pickup can become uncovered in a wet sump oil system, starving the engine of oil, often during high rpm use. Also, not a good thing! The answer is to convert to a dry sump oil system where most of the engine’s oil is stored in a remote oil tank and the oil pump is external to the engine and scavenges the engine’s oil from the oil pan, reducing aeration and windage losses.

A Dry Sump LS Oil Pan Is the Heart of Your Dry Sump Conversion

A dedicated dry sump LS oil pan is the basis for any dry sump conversion. Our dry sump LS oil pan was designed in-house here at Speedway Motors. This aluminum dry sump pan provides additional clearance to drop the engine’s weight down for better center of gravity, while the pan features three AN12 scavenge outlets for quick and efficient oil removal from the engine. Additionally, we provide an AN10 pressure inlet to connect to the pressure stage of the kit’s oil pump. The natural finish oil pan includes mounting hardware, and our one-piece neoprene pan gasket for quick and easy installation on your LS engine. The oil pan is compatible with popular LS applications including LS1, LS2, LS3, LQ4 and 5.3 engines, but will not will not work with LS4, LS7, LS9, and LSA applications.

Besides our dry sump specific oil pan, you’ll need to source the aforementioned dry sump pump and oil tank, as well as your choice of remote oil filter mount.  Additionally, you will need to determine the proper AN fittings and hose for your oil tank and filter inlet/outlet along with your dry sump pump to oil pan connections once you’ve mocked everything up and have confirmed mounting location of your oil tank and remote filter.
