A High-Performance Suspension for Whatever You’re Building

There’s a reason you see classics like Camaros, Chevelles, and C10 trucks at just about every car show or cruise night. They’re beautiful cars that are plentiful and have a ton of aftermarket support to make them faster and handle better. But what about the rest of us? For every one of those popular platforms there are a bunch of cool classics that just need a little improvement in the suspension department to make them into fun, modern performance cars. Those are the cars we had in mind when we developed the G-Comp Universal Front Suspension Kit.

Many of these less-common classics were equipped with some pretty old-fashioned suspension setups from the factory. Over the years, more modern solutions have become available to upgrade these uncommon platforms. The Mustang II front suspension has been adapted for just about every car out there. But that “modern” Mustang II suspension geometry is now over 50 years old. The engineers at Speedway Motors thought it was about time for an update, so they got busy figuring out how to adapt the track-proven performance of the direct-fit G-Comp suspension kits to a wide variety of platforms. G-Comp suspensions aren’t held back by outdated architecture. Instead, they’re state of the art suspension systems that are designed, built, and tested in Lincoln, Nebraska to provide a drastic improvement to your car’s ride and handling, no matter what you drive.

Proven Performance on the Street and the Track

It all starts with the G-Comp suspension geometry. Compared to more antiquated suspensions, G-Comp is engineered with race-winning architecture perfectly suited to modern pro touring builds. G-Comp front suspensions are designed to make the most of modern tires with wide tread and sticky compounds. G-Comp is engineered with optimal camber gain, meaning that as the suspension compresses in a hard corner, the top of the tire is pulled in, keeping that wide rubber planted to the pavement. We know from firsthand experience how G-Comp can totally transform the character of an old car. These suspension systems were not just designed to work on paper. They have been extensively driven, raced, and abused in our own fleet of test cars by Team Speedway, who can be found most weekends at the autocross track, dodging cones and taking notes about how to make G-Comp suspensions better, stronger, and faster.

A Strong and Adaptable Universal Suspension

Our engineers packaged all of that proven performance into a universal subframe available in different track widths and frame rail widths to make them adaptable into just about anything you can dream up. We’ve seen them go into everything from Lincoln Zephyrs to Studebakers to F1 pickups. Universal G-Comp front suspensions are available in 54”, 56”, 58”, 60”, and 62” track widths. The 54” kit offers G-Comp performance in an ultra-narrow track width and can be used in many smaller cars where previously a Mustang II was the only option. Those dimensions are the hub-to-hub width, which means that even more fine tuning is available by changing wheel offsets. The 54” kit is built on a subframe with 2" x 4" frame rails that measure 27” outside to outside, the 56” and 58” track widths have 2" x 3" rails that are 29 ¾” inches outside to outside, while 60” and 62” kits also use 2" x 3" tubes that are 33-3/4” on the outside. Also note that 54”, 56", and 58" widths use a sway bar mounted to the bottom of the frame rails, while the wider 60" and 62" versions use a high-mount sway bar that is positioned above the frame rails.

The subframes are made from .120”-wall tubing. These 48”-long straight sections of frame rail provide a straight and square reference and plenty of material to help you adapt the subframe into your car. Motor mounts are not included in this kit, leaving the door open for custom mounts to fit your specific engine and chassis.  Universal G-Comps also use the heavy-duty fabricated upright that was developed for the ultra-high performance G-Comp X Edition suspension systems. This racing pedigree equates to an extremely trick and virtually indestructible upright that uses tough C6 Corvette hubs.

Rack-and-Pinion for Precise Steering

Rack-and-pinion steering is engineered into the Universal G-Comp front suspension and the rack is included in the kit. A steering rack is lightweight, compact, and precise, offering quick and crisp steering feedback well suited to performance driving. That’s why the OE’s have been using them for decades. Because of all the benefits, installing a steering rack is a common upgrade to many classic cars, but care must be taken when installing a rack to the stock suspension. If the steering rack is not sized and positioned properly to work in concert with the suspension geometry, any improvement will be lost to nasty bump steer and dangerous handling. All widths of the Universal G-Comp suspensions are engineered with the rack-and-pinion where it needs to be to deliver safe, reliable, precise steering.

Coilover and Brake Kits to Further Personalize Your G-Comp Suspension

Coilover shocks are a common upgrade for many classic car owners looking for better performance. G-Comp suspensions are designed for coilovers, adding another dimension of adjustability and performance to the equation. Coilovers make it easy to adjust ride height and even change spring rates to tune the ride to your preference. We offer a variety of coilover shocks with fixed or adjustable valving. Adjustable shocks add yet another tuning option to dial in the perfect setup for your car. We have found with our fleet of test cars that an adjustable shock is a must for a serious track or dual-purpose car. The ability to adjust the shock’s compression and rebound is a valuable tool when it comes to setting up a car to handle just the way you want.

Universal G-Comps accept C6 Corvette brake kits. That means there’s a wide variety of high performance kits out there to make your car stop on a dime. If your application doesn’t require anything quite so extreme in the braking department, we also offer an economy brake kit that utilizes GM Metric calipers and 11.75” rotors to keep the cost down.

Recommended Coil-Over Shocks and Springs for G-Comp Series Front Suspensions:

*Modification of upper shock tower hole for adjuster knob clearance will be required upon installation. G-Comp front suspensions are designed for coilovers with a 12” mounted length and an 8” spring. Coilovers are not included with the G-Comp kit. Below are our recommendations:

AFCO Street/Pro-Touring Coilover Shock (non-adjustable)

AFCO Pro-Touring/Race Coilover Shock (single adjustable)

AFCO Max Performance/Race Coilover Shock (double adjustable)

Afco 8" Chrome Coilover Spring *Choose appropriate rate

Recommended Brake Kits for G-Comp Universal Front Suspensions:

Brakes are not included with G-Comp suspension, allowing you to further customize your install by picking the kit that’s right for your car.

All the kit components were well built and the design looks to be very good. I like that it uses modern c7 hubs so maintence down the road will be easier. My only complaint really is that every single bolt (minus the 6 metric cap bolts that hold the hubs) needed touched up to properly thread. Good thing I have thread files. I also had to run a tap through most of the female hardware (excluding the lock nuts for obvious reason) I don't regret the purchase but when you spend this much money I just expect better.

Bought this as a much improved alternative to the ancient Mustang II setups available. It's a modern suspension setup with modern geometry. Very impressed with build quality and fit and finish. Control arms are TIG welded. All the welds, MiG and Tig, look excellent. I am currently installing this and all the parts fit together without any tweaking necessary. All in all, I feel you'd be hard pressed to find a comparable suspension package for even twice the price.

I'm using this suspension set up to build a complete frame for my 1962 Impala convertible. I think it'll be a great foundation with a cheaper price point than buying a whole chassis.

Used the 60" in a full frame build for a C10. Nice product and the outside dimensions of the frame were the exact width of the original chassis making it easy to build.
