Stop Effectively with Our IMCA Approved GM Metric Disc Brake Calipers

Spec class racing removes a lot of the “wallet racing” by equalizing the racing equipment and focusing on the racer’s abilities. Having rules that specify specific parts, weights, dimensions, and more means everyone, theoretically, is running the same car with the same performance, making the race more about driver skill and race strategy. It is a great, cost effective, way to go racing while being competitive and having some fun.

One such spec item the IMCA mandates for many of their racing classes, including Modifieds, Hobby Stock, and others, is the use of the ’78-’88 GM Metric caliper. Having the same caliper body and piston size as an approved IMCA part means everyone has the same braking system capability. The issue has been finding a good GM Metric caliper though. Parts store remans are iffy at best, often being remanufactured with substandard parts, and requiring core charges or turning in your old calipers. We opted to craft a brand new reproduction steel brake caliper that meets all the class rules for IMCA approval but can also be used on the street with any aftermarket brake system that specs these GM Metric calipers for their brake kit.

Brand New Casting with Low Drag Piston Seal and Street Friendly Dust Seals

When we designed our IMCA approved GM Metric disc brake caliper we realized the majority of the sales would come from racers, but we also wanted to ensure that this disc brake caliper could be used in road going applications, as this brake caliper is very popular in rear disc brake conversions and for custom installations using caliper mounting brackets, either application specific or universal clamp-on or weld on options.

To that end, we fitted the 2-3/8-inch diameter piston with a low drag piston seal that retracts the piston slightly, pulling the brake pads away from the rotor for better fuel economy. Furthermore, standard piston dust seals are included in our brake caliper casting for extremely low maintenance requirements. These disc brake pistons are designed to fit best with 1-inch wide disc brake rotors but will work with .810-inch rotors as well when fitted with our disc brake pad spacer.

When designing these new Metric calipers, we did change the fluid port to the much more common 7/16-20 thread. This opens up your brake hose and banjo bolt/fitting options immensely for custom applications. Our 16-inch braided Teflon brake hose kit is a great option that will work for most applications, but we offer several different brake hose kits in various lengths for your project needs. We do not include brake caliper slide bolts and highly recommend our one-piece caliper slide bolt (two per caliper) that does not use the factory slide bolt bushings in the caliper. These GM Metric calipers use readily available replacement or performance disc brake pads found under the FMSI D154 pad shape reference number.

The calipers are a great re-production o

The 1978 GM Calipers were purchased as a replacement for the Mustang II calipers and rotors. I suspected there may be a clearance issue since I was using 14" Steel Painted Wheels with trim rings and hub caps. The wheels contacted the calipers on the very top of the caliper, nearest the inside of the wheel. A grinder and a few passes achieved the needed clearance. 15" Steel Wheels would clear without an issue. Still very pleased with the 11" rotors and calipers over the Mustang II nine inch rotors. I can now stop the truck.

MODIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Got these for a "T" bucket front axle and had to grind off tabs on bottom to clear front axle. Also had to file the inside of the through bolt mounts to get clearance on brake shoes. Some modifications required to make work but, once they were modified they work great.

I purchased a front brake conversion kit for a '55 Fairlane. The kit itself was great, but I was shipped two right calipers instead of a left and right. It took over two weeks following confirmation that the incorrect caliper had been shipped back to Speedway for the correct caliper to ship...meaning my project sat for two weeks waiting for the return to be processed. I could understand the policy if I had made the mistake, but this was Speedway's mistake and their lack of flexibility with their return policy is a knock against them. Further, the response from customer service of, "Well...this is our policy." is about what I would expect in today's world.

I was working on a23T. The person who built it got most of the parts from speedway. The salesperson ask me to measure rotor size and width and he found what I needed. The only bad thing was the front had a different size banjo bolt than the rear. Ended up changing the rear hose.

I would buy these again.

I had to replace my 1st set of GM Metric calipers due to personal 'screw up', however these look like good calipers. Hope the work as good. Be nice if they came polished or plated.
