Return PolicyStraight axle pickup trucks, like the 1947-1954 Chevy 3100 (1/2 ton respectively) were originally designed for hauling cargo and not hauling butt! These trucks dutifully handled deliveries and served farmers and other owners for decades. However, today these GM Advance Design trucks are sought after for their period styling and certainly not for how they stopped, handled, or accelerated. These are all easily updated today to provide enthusiasts with those classic truck stylings, but that are now able to handle modern roads safely.
The Mustang 2 frontend is a popular independent front suspension (IFS) solution available for dozens of different car and truck models, from pre-war hot rods through 1960s and ’70s muscle cars; full frame or unibody there is probably a Mustang II IFS suspension kit available. The majority of these Mustang 2 crossmembers require welding for installation. We wanted to make the addition of a Mustang 2 crossmember to the popular Advance Design 1947-1954 GM 1/2 ton trucks something the average wrench turner could install themselves in a weekend with nothing more than a drill and some hand tools. Our 1947-1954 Chevy truck Mustang 2 crossmember, spring towers, and frame boxing plates are designed to not only bolt in, but interlock each other as well, creating a super strong chassis design. Classic Truck magazine’s Week to Wicked build even featured this Mustang 2 crossmember in our ’52 Chevy truck.

To weld or bolt in an IFS kit?
Started the project early Saturday morning around 7:30 am. Removed front clip and suspension by noon, and had all frame brackets removed by 1 pm. I finished the installation Sunday afternoon, this included painting the A arms and waiting for them to dry. The true question here is if the product good or not, only miles down the road will tell. I can tell you that the average Joe can have this front end assembly installed in one day, and install the upper and lower suspension the next. The engineering that went into this front end assembly is very good, with good welds, and an easy to follow PDF instruction set that you can get off the product page. Here's to keeping an old rat on the road.

Some modification required
I began installation but after a couple hours of easy installation i realized my kit didnt come as pictured. Specifically the inside braces had no access holes towards the front as is pictured in instructions and on the install video. I had to cut out the windows to allow access to the inside to install the bolts. This caused an extra couple of hours work and aggravation. I still think it is a quality product and seems well made. Quality control must have let this one slip through as it doesnt mention having to cut on the new brace anywhere.

Got the bolt in IFS crossmember. I do notice in older kits, there is a cut out to be able to get to one of the nuts inside, but the new kit does not have it. If I can make any recommendations, please go back to using that cut out. I had a heck of a time getting to that nut and eventually made my own cut out.

Prep to bolt up was easy. Instructions need a little work on leaving some bolts out until others are installed. Some of the bolts did not line up on the channel brace but drilling them out was not difficult. The only real frustrating thing is that the instructions show a cut out in the channel plate that is not in the part. If it were getting a wrench inside would have been much easier. I used a wrench with tape in it to hold the nuts in place to thread the bolts on.

Easy to follow instructions and parts are easy to identify. Problem I had was, sorry to say was the packaging, missing some of the bolts. But easy to put on with only basic stuff you should already have in your garage. Aka Drill and leveler.
