The third member on a rear axle, also known as the center section or pumpkin, is the central part of the axle assembly where the differential, ring gear & pinion gears are housed. The 3rd member connects to the driveshaft and transmits power to the wheels through the axle shafts. Inside a locker or limited slip third member assembly, there are either gears or clutch plates that work together to allow the wheels to rotate at different speeds, which is essential for smooth turning. In the case of a spool 3rd member assembly, the axle shafts are permanently locked together for maximum traction. The third member is often removable from the axle housing, making it easier to replace or repair.
