Learn more about u-joints and steering systems by reading our tech article. U-Joint Selection and Design.

Application

When purchasing U-Joints, 3 easy steps will help ensure that they will be correct for your application.

STEP 1
Be sure to measure the diameter of the shaft and count the number of splines on the shaft. Some shafts have a blank spot ground on one side. To get the correct number of splines, use a flat edge and cover the blank half of the shaft through the diameter and count the splines on the other half. Multiply that number by 2, thus giving you the total number of splines on the full circumference of the shaft.

STEP 2

Choose which shaft type best suits your application: 3/4" weld on, 3/4" DD or 1" DD.

STEP 3
With these two pieces of information at hand, refer to our chart to find the appropriate part number of the ujoint for your specific application.

Overall Assessment

Customers acknowledge the high quality and good finish of our U-Joint product, which is consistently praised for its functionality and sturdy build. Some reviews highlight the product's fantastic fit and its replaceability as significant pros. Despite being bulkier than other brands, users find it works well and offers added safety due to the need for shaft notching where the pinch bolt goes. However, a few customers found the U-Joint to be a bit loose, thus requiring additional tightening. Overall, customers expressed satisfaction with its performance, quality, and relative ease of installation.

Top quality U Joint. Beautiful finish.

This joint connection allows you to precisely cut an groove your DD shaft to exactly fit the configuration of your vehicle. Watch the length of the shaft protruding through the u joint end to prevent jamming the swivel joints. I grooved the shaft with my bench grinder to set the locking screw. Everything fit together like a Swiss watch.

Loose

These u-joints are extremely loose fitting to the D-D shaft. You have to tighten the pinch bolts WAY over torqued and even then they will not tighten on the shaft. One of the three u-joints that I purchased did almost tighten on the shaft after torqueing the pinch bolt over twice the recommended torque specification. I will keep them for future builds only for mock-up purposes but there is no way I would use unisteer u-joints in the future. By the way, I am a professional builder so I do know what I'm talking about.

Found I had a better quality joint after I installed this one, didn't want to disassemble it to return it. Overpriced and the threads are cut off so the pinch bolt stripped out and had to buy another one, it was so mangled that I couldn't even tell it was metric. Had to call the manufacturer to get the thread pitch and they're not the friendliest of people. Wouldn't buy again.

could not get straight shot from column to steering rack, had to order hiem joint and u joint to bring shaft out away from headers. this joint was a little bulkier than the other brand but worked out nicely. also had to notch my shaft where the pinch bolt went through which feels safer than a locknut to me. may not work in a tight clearance area for some because this is a little beefier than other brands.

Questions & Answers

1 Question • 2 Answers

What is the bolt size? The bolts that come with the u- joint are regular steel and are rusting. Also, on one of the reviews there was a complaint about the clamping, I have yet to REALLY tighten but can see where there may be an issue. Any recommendations? Thanks!!!
