Speedway Motors 91032343 Details

This is a great new concept for street rods with tubular or I-beam axles. It's hard to visualize how this works, but it's the hottest new idea out there!

Designed to replace the common Vega steering box, this rack and pinion assembly has a long passenger-side tie rod that hooks up to the right spindle like a Vega-style drag link. The rack unit is mounted on a sturdy bracket that bolts to your existing Vega box mount. The rack mounts much lower and farther forward than a box to provide more clearance, and those who have installed the system report quicker steering response and easier effort than a steering box.

The racks have 9/16" 26-spline shafts.

Specify 11/16" or 5/8" tie rod thread. The 5/8" is used with a LH heim joint, 11/16" is used with a LH tie rod end. Outer tie rod and jam nut not included.

If you are using heim ends, you may wish to order heim 175-0316 and jam nut 910-01056. If using tie rod ends, you may wish to order tie rod end 910-02919 and jam nut 910-01159.

Overall Assessment

Customers commend the product for its efficacy in solving ground clearance issues, specifically in street rod applications. Its simplicity and clean fit in different set-ups, such as a '31 p/u, are highly regarded. Users noted a significant improvement in steering capability, emphasizing its superiority over the previous Vega style cross steer set ups, notably decreasing sloppiness and free play. Despite the need for some custom fitting, the overall feedback is that this product elevates the steering experience to a modern level.

I used this to replace a Vega style cross steer set up. The original had started to get a touch sloppy, with a bit of free play. Installed this and now steers like a modern car. The Vega box wasn't this good brand new. I did have to space the rack with an upward angle to clear the bottom bar on the 4 bar front, but its a hot rod and most fits are custom.

I have a 34 Ford pickup with the Vega box and cross steer. Will this fit my application? The little truck is difficult to steer. Thought about electric power steering, but do not have room for the electric motor under the dash so can't hide it. Thought this may be the answer.

Is the Shaft Extension Kit required for this, as a bolt in replacement I want to use this in an existing s/u on a '33 Ford Roadster. (It has the vega box installed now) Does it need the shaft extension to "bolt in" as a replacement to the vega box. I would hate to get it and find out I need the extension and not have it at hand.
