Smooth Out Your Straight Axle Hot Rod's Steering with Our Simple Bolt On Solution

If you’re wary of driving your hot rod because of wobbles, bump steer, and all of the vibrations of the road rattling through your steering system and into your arms, a steering stabilizer is just what you need. In the same way that a shock absorber helps to limit excessive spring oscillation, a steering stabilizer eliminates vibrations transferred through the steering system, stifles wobble, reduces bump steer effects, decreases wear on tie rod ends, and dampens the shock effects of hitting a pothole. Don't let the potholes win. It's time to restore confidence in your ride, enjoy more shows and Sunday cruises, more double-takes, and even (why not?) more errands!

Our hot rod steering stabilizer features a universal design for lightweight street rods and hot rods with straight axle Hairpin / 4-Bar front suspension and manual steering. The steering stabilizer shock is easily adapted to both traditional (push/pull) and cross-steer (Vega box) steering systems. With a small amount of fabrication, those of you with split-wishbone suspension can also enjoy the benefits of this hot rod steering stabilizer (drilling and tapping a hole). The gloss black finish compliments any suspension, but we do offer a chrome steering stabilizer if you're looking to match a chrome straight axle setup.

If it wasn't already too-good-to-be-true, here's an added bonus: this steering stabilizer shock is simple to install. The steering stabilizer shock has a 6 inch stroke, and when installed, should be at the center of its stroke with the wheels straight ahead. This ensures full turning radius in both directions. Each end of the steering stabilizer has a clamp that fits over 7/8-inch OD tubing; one end fastens to a bar that moves with the steering ( such as a tie rod or drag link), while the other end attaches to a suspension link that does not move with the steering (like a tubular radius rod). Once both of these ends are attached, your steering has been successfully stabilized!

DOES IT'S JOB

Installed this onto a United Pacific '32 frame. The front Axle & Kingpins were shot: hence Death-Wobble². After replacing the Axle & Kingpins, shimmy + bounce steer became a thing. I must also mention that the steering box has significant play in it & needs adjustment/replacement. My alignment has not yet been dialed in 100%. since replacing the Axle either. Those issues pending, this stabilizer HAS reduced shimmy by ~50% & bounce steer by at least 75% at this point. This stabilizer will not perform any miracles on any pre-existing steering problems. But I can firmly state that it will add stability AND reduce extra wear upon the remaining steering system components. The only ??? is to the mileage/lifespan of it. Even @ 5k miles of use it's worth IMHO. Considering the $$$ and 30min. painless installation, I have NO IDEA why the previous owner of my rod hadn't installed this. OH WELL...God left it up to me =) So it's my duty & pleasure to pass my experience to whomever \♥/

Quality check

I usually don't get substandard product from Speedway. But this was totally unacceptable. It would not compress directly out of the box. Should be even resistance. But speedway always takes care of any issues. Appreciate that.

This is a re-purposed VW part. It's pretty lightweight, but it does have enough resistance to be effective. The problem I ran into is that it has a stroke of 6.5 inches, but my tie rod has a 7-inch travel, so this unit did increase my turning circle. Not usually a problem, but sometimes it can be. It DID solve my "death wobble," until I can check and/or replace whatever part is actually causing the problem. Note the clamps have a 7/8 inch closed diameter.
