Speedway Motors 91013606 Details

Economy Flathead V8 Headers fit 1937-41 cars with Vega steering and 1942-48 cars with stock steering.  These headers are painted black, and include gaskets and bolts.

Application

  • These probably won't fit Model T or A due to narrow frame width, particularly on passenger side.
  • These headers also may not work with stock steering on 1932-1934 cars, but are okay with the Vega cross-steer setup.
  • They work well in 1935-1941 Fords using our #91632003 mount bracket and Vega box.
  • 1942-1948 cars will probably require shimming of motor mounts to clear steering linkage.
  • Most 1949-1951 applications will have fitting problems due to interference with steering box and/or linkage.
  • On pickups the steering box can normally be clearenced slightly so that the headers can be used.

Fits but takes some work

I replaced the stock steering box in a '39 Ford with a Flaming River Vega box using the Speeday mounting bracket that was called for. The flathead V8 is in the stock location. These headers almost fit but had a couple of problems. The center tube hit the top edge of the steering box and had to be dimpled with a torch for clearance. Second, the header dumps straight down below the frame rather than back through the frame (compare the Speedway picture to the attached picture). Routing this way could produce clearance problems with the wishbone. I had to cut and build an end on the header to match up with existing dual exhaust. I don't know of any other headers that would with this configuration. I would recommend this to someone as long as they know there might be some work requires to fit their application. Pictures are attached.

I purchased this to use on my 8BA flathead, which is ported and polished for better flow. The price is right, but these headers have odd shaped cutouts where the tubes from the flange meet the main tube. They are about 30% blocked as the cut in the main tube does not match the diameter of the welded tube. I think it works great for mockup, but I think it would restrict flow in use, so I wouldn't use it. I may use them on another "stock" flathead that I have to see if they work, but I won't use them on my rebuilt 8BA.

Passenger side fits my 8ba between the rails. I had to modify drivers side to fit around steering box. If you can weld, you can save a lot with these headers.
