Modern Braking for Classic Ford Trucks

In addition to being great looking trucks, full-size Ford trucks and Broncos well into the 80’s had a major benefit hidden underneath; the Ford 9-inch rearend. Many of them came from the factory with the now legendary 9-inch axle bolted up. This is the axle that hot rodders and off-roaders have been stuffing under just about everything for decades due to its legendary durability and ease of service. It has become the axle to have, and just one of the things that makes these Ford trucks great.

When these trucks and their venerated 9-inches were rolling off the assembly line, rear drum brakes were still considered the way to go, and generally got the job done in 70’s and 80’s traffic, but now those old drums are showing their age. When it’s time to add some stopping power to your pre-’87 Ford truck or Bronco, don’t spend a bunch of time and money wrestling with those heavy, rusty old drums. Instead, consider a rear disc brake conversion kit. Discs will add simplicity and most importantly some serious stopping power to your truck. But don’t use just any old 9-inch disc kit. This Speedway Motors 9-Inch Ford Truck Rear End Disc Brake Kit bolts right up to the three most common 9” axle flange styles and has the 5 on 5-1/2” wheel bolt circle that’s correct for your truck.

Complete Bolt-on Brake Kit with Emergency Brake

Not only will this kit bolt right up to your truck with no need for any welding or drilling, it’s also complete with all the hardware needed for installation. That means 11-1/2” vented rotors, calipers, slide bolts, brackets, and pads are all in the box. Even the rubber brake hoses with 3/8”-24 IFF adapter fittings and 54-1/2” and 64-1/2”-long emergency brake cables are included. A kit this complete will save the time, expense, and the annoyance of having to run around trying to source the odds and ends needed to complete the install on your truck.

The included caliper brackets are designed to work with three common Ford 9" rear axle flange sizes; Small Ford, Big Ford Old Style, and Big Ford New Style. They mount widely available single piston Cadillac Eldorado-style calipers with 10mm-1.5 inlets and a self-adjusting mechanical emergency brake. D154 brake pads are included, and these calipers use common GM Metric Brake Pads when it’s time for replacement. Replacement Rotors are also available to ensure a long service life for your disc kit.

It can be tricky to find a disc brake kit that retains the 5 on 5-1/2” bolt circle found on these trucks. It also happens that Ford has been using that bolt pattern since the 20’s. That means this brake kit is also an ideal upgrade for 9-inch equipped hot rods. With this kit, it’s possible to add disc brakes while keeping those cool vintage steelies or mags with the early Ford bolt pattern.

Pretty decent kit. I would buy again.

Rear disc conversion was pretty straight forward. Once I had all the spacers where they needed, I tacked them together to make future service easier. Had to grind both calipers to clear my 15" slot mags. Had to source hard lines to connect the rubber hoses to the brake distribution block the rear end vent attaches to. Emergency brake is weak for my 33" ties no matter how tight you adjust it. The emergency cable length were just right for my Early Bronco. One of the u-clips that secure the hose ends broke which was interesting as they fit very loose. Reused an old one. Overall good setup for a somewhat universal kit.

Terrible product and the tech support was unable to help

Brake kit was extremely cheap made and the register on the rotor did not fit the axle flange. Tech support didn't have any idea what I was talking about at first. Once they figured it out they didn't have a fix.

I haven't gotten to install the kit yet. A lot of stuff going on, remodeling kitchen, bad weather, etc. But I did go over each and every item to check it's value and build quality. I give it a 100. Every part seems to have extra metal and material in it. I believe I have as good of a kit available at the lowest price possible.

fit perfect. all parts are nice quality. shipping was quick and price was great . hard to find the right kit for a 9inch with the large axle flanges found in the 60s trucks., was happy to find this kit. instructions could use a little improvement but i was able to sort it out pretty easily.

I was thoroughly impressed that every different combination of adapter/spacer needed to make it work was included. I did go a STEP further upon completion and I put a weld across all the adapters/spacers so there could never be any wiggle between them later. But there was no way to make the emergency brake cables work; the longer of the 2 was barely long enough to reach across the width of the axle from the passenger side, let alone to where it needed to mount on the driver's side of the truck.

My 1986 Jeep CJ7 has a Ford 9-inch rear end with drum brakes. Didn't like stopping quickly if needed. It will stop now.

Pay $600+ is not worthy. Just looks good. All the money and time spent on installation, I wouldn't do it again.
