Improve Your Square Body C10’s Ride and Handling with A 4-Link Conversion

The typical 73-87 Chevy C10 rides on a solid axle suspended by a pair of leaf springs out back. This traditional rear suspension design is noteworthy for its ability to manage heavy loads (perfect for a pickup truck) and for its simple design. However, as these Square Body pickups are now seeing a second life as show vehicles and weekend cruisers, that heavy-duty suspension out back that provides a firm and bouncy truck-like ride needs to go. You can only do so much with an axle flip kit, and frankly, you’re keeping the leaf spring packs. So, at the end of the day you have the great looks of a lowered truck, but not the handling and ride quality. While that may be just fine for some, we know many enthusiasts are looking for the next step, which in the case of the Square Body C10 is a 4-link rear suspension conversion.

Feel The Benefit of A 4-Link’s Tuning for A Smoother Ride That Plants Your Tires

A 4-link rear suspension provides a smoother ride due to its more compliant wheel travel. Leaf springs can bind up due to axle wrap on acceleration, whereas as a 4-link’s solid tubular links create a more fluid like movement for better ride quality, with the overall dampening of the ride handled by your choice of coilover shocks and their tunable spring rates vs the minimal spring rate changes available to a leaf spring product. This same function of the 4-link’s bars also prevents axle wrap and wheel hop, planting the rear tires for better traction and acceleration capabilities. The highly tunable nature of a parallel four link setup (bar length, Panhard adjustment, coilover shock valving and spring rates, and more) allows for quick instant center, ride height, and compression/rebound adjustments.

The LevelSet™ 4-link conversion kit includes all major components except for the coilover shocks in an easy to install bolt-on kit. We leave the shock choice up to you, versus offering dozens of the same basic kit with different shocks included. Manufactured with 7-gauge steel brackets with 1/4-inch steel plate reinforcing high-stress areas, the LevelSet™ 4-link’s robust design and grade 8 installation hardware ensure that your four-link kit installation can handle whatever you throw at it. From boulevard cruising to weekend autocross, it’ll take the abuse. 1026 DOM steel link bars with 1.125-inch OD use 1.50-inch 1020 DOM steel bushing housings to mount the included urethane bushings for a long service life with smooth articulation and reduced noise. The parallel four link bars and the Panhard bar all use 3/4-16 threaded bushing/rod ends for adjustability. Suspension spacers are machined from 304 stainless steel while the included shock spacers are machined from 6061-T6511 aluminum. All major steel components, including the axle brackets, crossmember, 4-link forward mounts, and more are finished in a satin black powder coat for corrosion resistance and high-end appearance under your Square Body C10. Overall, the parallel four link is easier to package and provides more room for exhaust and other hardware than a triangulated 4-link suspension.

LevelSet™ Bolt-In C-Notch Kit Included for Maximum Suspension Articulation

When adding any 4-link rear suspension setup you run the very real chance of axle housing to frame interference, especially anything more than a 4-inch drop on most vehicles. To provide maximum suspension movement with the LevelSet™ 4-link rear suspension system we include the LevelSet™ bolt-in C-notch kit with your four link kit for a complete and total rear suspension conversion for your 73-87 Square Body C10 2WD short or long bed pickup. This bolt-in C-notch kit provides all the clearance you’ll need to get that 6-inch drop and only requires minor trimming/cutting of the bottom and side of your C10’s rear frame section over the axle. A true bolt-in conversion, the C-notch brackets are made from 1/4-inch plate steel that is powder coated to match the 4-link’s steel brackets and includes screw-in bump stops.

Select The Best Coilover Shocks for Your Build Needs and Budget to Finish the Project

We know that for every serious corner carver there are at least a dozen Square Body owners just looking for a killer stance and a ride that doesn’t knock your fillings out. That’s why we’ve left the coilover shock choice up to your individual project needs. We offer many different coilover shocks in fixed, single, and double adjustable models. Suggested spring rates of 200-250 lb/in are recommended in 10- or 12-inch lengths to dial in your new LevelSet™ 4-ink rear suspension. Looking to build a nice cruiser, a fixed rate shock with a 200 lb/in spring will no doubt get the job done. However, if you’re looking for more control and more adjustability, perhaps a double adjustable coilover that provides independent adjustment of compression and rebound damping that will allow fine tuning of handling and traction abilities is more your need. Whatever the coilover shock features and spring rates you land on, we have what you’re looking for from AFCO, QA1, and others to make your LevelSet™ 4-link shine.
