  • Excellent choice for Muscle Car LS swaps to keep floor and tunnel modification to a minimum due to the smaller transmission size compared to a T-56
  • Compatible with standard 168 tooth LS flywheels and clutches as well as stock and aftermarket LS starters
  • For use with hydraulic throwout bearings only as there is no provision for a mechanical clutch fork

If Your LS Swap Plans Include Three Pedals, We Have the Perfect LS Bellhousing Solution

When you get right down to the production numbers, as popular as the LS engine has been for GM, it has relatively low production numbers when backed by a manual transmission. Sure, there are diehard enthusiasts out there that order their F-body with a manual, but when you look at pure numbers most LS engine applications (Impala, GM truck, etc.) are either automatic only or have very low manual transmission production numbers.

So, when it comes to the budget friendly LS swap everyone loves for their classic GM muscle car, truck, or hot rod, it is tough to find a complete swap source with a manual transmission behind it. Not to mention, a lot of the modern 6-speed manuals don’t fit the smaller transmission tunnels of classic cars and can have unique crossmember requirements. Therefore, it is often much easier and more cost effective to either retain the 4-speed manual that is in your GM muscle car or truck, or to upgrade to a modern 5-speed transmission that can handle the increased performance potential of your LS swap if you’re planning a turbo or supercharger upgrade. To do so means having the proper LS bellhousing to retain your stock 4-speed or easily upgrade to a tough 5-speed. Speedway Motors has the solution with our steel LS swap bellhousing.

Precision CNC machined and Fixture Welded for A Perfect Fit

We know the offerings for a budget agreeable LS swap bellhousing are limited and we wanted to change that. Our steel LS swap bellhousing provides the perfect answer to mounting your factory 4-speed Muncie up to your new LS engine if you’re looking for a LS to Muncie bellhousing. Our steel LS bellhousing also provides you with the upgrade path to a modern 5-speed like the Tremec TKX, the previous Tremec TKO series transmissions, or even the classic Richmond Gear 4 and 5-speed without having to buy yet another bellhousing. Making this the perfect TKX LS bellhousing or TKO 600 LS bellhousing when it comes time to upgrade your transmission from 4 gears to 5!

Designed and manufactured in house here at Speedway Motors, you know you’re buying a quality product. We start with high strength steel and CNC laser cut the block mounting flange surface from .318-inch (5/16-inch) material. The transmission flange is cut and machined in the same manner from thicker .400-inch (13/32-inch) material. Both flanges are then held in a precise fixture with our 7-gauge steel formed 6-inch deep bellhousing and completely welded for a strong and tough bellhousing assembly. The completed assembly is then given a black zinc coating for great, long lasting looks. Though not SFI rated, we do include a .115-inch (5/32-inch) thick cover plate and all new installation hardware.

Setup For Hydraulic Clutch Release Saves Installation Headaches and Provides More Room

Many classic vehicles use mechanical clutch linkage systems, which often do not mesh well with modern LS engine swaps and exhaust systems. Ditching the clutch fork and linkage is truly one of the best things you can do in a LS swap project, which is why our LS bellhousing is only provisioned for hydraulic release bearing setups. Abandoning the clutch fork, linkage, and all that pivot hardware mess for a hydraulic release bearing and a vehicle specific or universal hydraulic clutch master cylinder system produces less pedal effort and really cleans up the engine bay. Our bellhousing features a 1.5-inch hole at the top 12 o’clock position for hydraulic line routing to keep line length as short as possible and away from hot exhaust system parts.

Installing the steel LS bellhousing is no different than any other LS or SBC bellhousing. We include new M10-1.5 metric socket head LS bellhousing bolts to secure the bellhousing to your LS block, along with 1/4-20 hardware to attach the cover plate to the bellhousing itself. You simply need to provide the 1/2-13 transmission mounting bolts for your 4 or 5-speed transmission, but if your old fasteners have seen better days or you simply don’t have any at all, we have replacement transmission mounting bolts available too. Like any bellhousing installation we recommend checking and confirming alignment with a dial indicator and if required, installing offset dowel pins to correct any misalignment to prevent clutch engagement issues or noise. LS bellhousing dowel pins are the same dimensions as SBC dowel pins too in case you have some rolling around in your toolbox.

Our LS swap steel bellhousing is the perfect solution to mate your LS engine to your existing 4-speed transmission or new 5-speed transmission so you can get your project vehicle back on the road and under LS power sooner rather than later.

This thing is built out of 1/4 inch steel I believe, and welded, super strong. Although it doesn't come with an SFI rating I would guess it will function as a scatter shield with no problem. This thing is beefy!! Great job Speedway!!!! Worked perfectly with my 5.3 LS and Tremec TKX. I installed the transmission and hydraulic clutch bearing together with the bell housing first, then mated it to the engine. Reason for that was it was too difficult to get the hydraulic clutch bearing centered when the bell housing was already bolted to the engine. Also I needed to order some .007 offset dowel pins to get the centering within spec for the TKX.

I was looking for a steel bell housing but didn't want to spend close to 1k for a quicktime bell housing. I was very impressed with the speedway motors housing. It lined up within 1 thousandth of centerline , and the quality seems top notch.

Great product for the price. Appears to be well built. Just heavier than I thought. But never used steel bellhousing before. All in all great item.
