Ditch The Coiled Cord and Make Your Quick Disconnect Steering Wheel Easier and Safer
Serious street cars and just about any “door car” that runs the quarter mile utilizes a quick disconnect steering wheel setup to allow the driver easier entry and exit. Many racers equip their quick release steering wheel with various electrical push buttons or toggles for such things are trans brake, line lock, up/down shifts for electronically controlled automatics, communications/radio, and yes, even a horn button for street legal race cars. Traditionally these buttons are wired from the steering wheel to the dash via one or more coiled cords (like those old kitchen wall phones we remember).
These cords often make disconnecting the steering wheel difficult, as the cords easily get wrapped around the steering column when making turns. This is especially troublesome on street driven cars (think drag-and-drive or “true street” event cars) that see a lot of turns. It also prevents full removal of the wheel due to the working length of the coiled cord wiring harness. This makes emergency wheel removal difficult, if not impossible, as the wheel can only be moved so far before the wire length is stretched to its maximum. When you need to get out of your car in a hurry the last thing you want to do is to fight with your quick release steering wheel hub and wheel still in the way after disconnecting it from the steering column. Realistically, you want to pull the release collar, remove the steering wheel, and toss it out of your way so you can get out immediately. Our new quick disconnect steering wheel hub kit provides internal wiring connections to help you “cut the cord.”
Spring Loaded Contacts Enable Your Steering Wheel Buttons Without External Wiring
With a similar design to a typical steering wheel horn button contact ring, albeit enclosed in a modern aluminum housing and carrying more than two contacts, our quick release hub provides you with the ability to connect up to five switches/buttons through the 22 AWG wiring harness (five control wires and one ground wire; six wires total). These circuits are rated for 5 amps and can be run in parallel to support a 10 am switch load if needed. You can also use a standard automotive relay for higher amp loads, using your steering wheel switch to trigger the relay’s ground signal.
The floating wiring terminals and connector provide a sleek solution to your steering wheel switch wiring needs without a coiled cord wrapping around your steering column during turning maneuvers or catching on everything as you attempt to enter or exit the car. This quick release coupler’s wiring maintains electrical connection throughout the 360-degree arc of the steering wheel and immediately indexes to the proper electrical contacts thanks to the quick release system’s blind spline system. This ensures that the steering wheel hub can only be installed in one location on the splined adapter each time the wheel is removed.
360-Degree Quick Release Steering Wheel Hub for Fast, Fumble Free Action
No one wants to be in a bad situation for any length of time when it comes to an on track incident. The more quickly you can exit the car the safer you will be. This is why we opted to construct our wired steering wheel quick disconnect system with a 360-degree release collar. In a high-stress environment there’s no need to recall exactly where the push button release or dowel pin release is on your quick release steering wheel with buttons adapter system. With our wired quick release hub system simply grab the lock ring behind the steering wheel and pull it towards you. It’s that fast and that easy to get your wheel out of the way and you on your way out of the car to safety.
Our quick release steering wheel adapter is perfect for those of you with serious street cars equipped with a roll cage, such as drag and drive participants. With our quick release steering wheel hub, you can use it as a quick release steering wheel with horn or as a quick release steering wheel with cruise control. Having a drag racing quick release steering wheel setup with a quick release steering wheel horn button or other button function allows the best of both worlds. On steering wheel control of standard items like a horn, cruise control, flash to pass lights, or even comms with your co-pilot.
We use a standard 19 spline quick release hub sleeve for 3/4-inch steering shafts, only it features a “blind” spline to provide repeatable alignment with the floating electrical connector. You must use a hollow steering shaft for wire routing purposes. Additionally, if your current steering column support brace isn’t of sufficient length to locate the steering shaft rod end bearing in the proper location behind the electrical coupling for the installation of the anti-rotation hardware for the coupler, we suggest the addition of an 8-inch or 11-inch weld-on steering shaft mount. We also highly recommend the use of a wiring quick disconnect, such as a six-wire connector at the base of the steering shaft/column to aid in future steering shaft removal for any other repair work when using a quick release steering wheel with buttons.
