Speedway Motors 91065410 Details

If you want the early look but are reluctant to use old non-energizing drum brakes, we have just what you need. Our 100% new self-energizing backing plate assemblies come complete with shoes, wheel cylinders and hardware. Fits either the front or rear of 1937-48 Ford cars or 1937-47 Ford half-ton pickups with original style rear axle.

These brake assemblies can be used with Buick drums and 1948 Ford hubs, or we also offer new iron 12" x 2" brake drums (910-65400) with 5 on 5-1/2" bolt circle which are impossible to find elsewhere.

  • Wheel Cylinder Inlet: 7/16"-20 straight thread
    • NOT 7/16"-20 IFF
    • Inlet fitting will require a sealing washer or O-ring style fitting
  • Bolt Pattern: 3-3/8" center-to-center both horizontal and vertically
    • If using Model A or B spindles the holes will have to be elongated inward to fit the narrower bolt pattern
    • We recommend use of adapter rings (916-31928) to keep the spindle centered in the backing plate

Bendix Brakes on '39 Ford

These comments relate to the installation of these brakes to the front of a '39 Ford with one-piece wide 5 hub/drum. There was significant clearance issues between the backing plate and the spindle. Had to cut away a large portion of the top of the spindle (pictures attached). Used a cutting wheel on a die grinder for the initial cut and ground to get the final fit. Once installed they work fine, much better than the original non-self energizing. The instructions and pre-purchase info understate the work required to fit the product to front spindles.

good function, bad replica

I bought this for a customers car to run with buick drums. I was really let down with the stamping of the backing plates. Its almost like they were not stamped deep enough, the lines lacked definition. They were a poor representation of the originals. But the backing plates were really thick and everything function wise seamed stout. If looks are of no concern they are fine. But for the price I would expect a better product.

Installed myself as part of a complete upgrade on my brake system. Required some minor modifications to my front spindles, but I was aware of this prior to purchase. Only set back during installation was the center hole in the backing plates was a little too small to fit around the spindle. A few trips around my spindle sander fixed that issue in a matter of minutes.

I am installing these on a 26 Ford Hot rod. Flathead V8, C4 etc. I have 39 Ford wide 5 pattern wheels and drums that I wanted to use. This kit fit the spindle (after modification) just right and the drums work fine. Parts were very heavy duty and well made. Everything assembled as expected. As another reviewer said, I had to cut off a about a 3/8" square piece of my spindle to allow for the backing plate, But I was prepared because of the other reviewer. It took me about 45 min per spindle for the mod. I agree, speedway could make this more clear, but overall it worked out very well.

Installed on a 41 Ford along with the Speedway brake drums. It now stops like it has disk brakes. Yeah you have to modify the spindle but that is a small price to pay for the drastic improvement in stopping power.
