Universal Front Mount Intercooler Helps Reduce Charge Air Temps For More Horsepower

If you’re considering building a project with a turbo or even a supercharger, or already have one on the road, you no doubt have read all about how the compressed air leaving the turbo or supercharger is heated to well above ambient temperature. Now think back to your high school science class and you’ll remember that cool air is denser than hot air. Denser air packs more oxygen molecules, which in turn means you’re pushing more oxygen into your engine’s combustion chambers. Sure, the turbo kit or supercharger is doing that as well but take the turbo or supercharger’s pressurized output and cool it off and you’re now pushing even more oxygen into the engine, which makes more horsepower and torque. It’s truly a win-win situation if you can utilize an intercooler in your build.

It's not unheard of for compressed air exiting a turbo or supercharger to exceed 250 degrees F. An efficient aftermarket intercooler, often referred to as a front mount intercooler, or “FMIC,” placed at the front of the vehicle in the airstream can lower the compressed inlet temperatures dramatically, often close to ambient temperatures. The hot air passes through the universal intercooler’s core where ambient air passes through the core tubes/fins, taking the heat with it. The function is much like a traditional radiator, but instead of reducing coolant temperature you are reducing inlet air temperature. This is known as an air-to-air intercooler.

Large Turbo Intercooler Core Supports Generous Airflow Needs

When adding a universal front mount intercooler to your boosted project car you don’t want something that is going to be too small and cause a restriction in airflow. Our universal intercooler features a large aluminum core, sized at 23.50 inches wide, 11.588 inches high, and 2.631 inches thick. This raw finished core uses fully polished cast and welded end tanks to ensure your hot charge air flows unrestricted through the aftermarket intercooler. Not to mention the polished ends provide a look that means business through your front grille area. The inlet and outlet are both sized at standard 3-inch diameters with hose retaining beads cast in to ensure your intercooler piping/hoses stay in place under high boost levels.

Universal Intercooler Mounting Designed To Fit Most Applications

Application specific intercoolers are just that, specific to a certain vehicle application. For anyone building a restomod, Pro Touring, hot rod, or classic muscle car, especially with a modern V8 engine like the ubiquitous LS swap, you’re not going to find an application specific intercooler. This is why we designed our universal turbo intercooler to be as flexible as possible when it comes to installation. While photography shows the universal intercooler with the inlet and outlet at the top on each side, you can invert the unit and place the inlet and outlet at the bottom if needed for front bumper/valance clearance or for your specific intercooler tubing routing. You’ll find welded mounting bosses top and bottom (metric M8 threaded, hardware included) that work with the included 5-inch long mounting brackets and standoffs for your custom mounting solution. The included .063-inch thick aluminum mounting brackets can be formed, bent, cut, or modified to your liking to aid in mounting the intercooler to your vehicle.

Compact Dimensions Provide Easy Fitment Solution For Boosted Applications

The overall dimensions of the universal intercooler are 31 inches wide x 12.80 inches high x 3.145 deep. This allows installation in the frontal area of most muscle cars and pickup trucks without major fabrication or cutting while providing enough surface area to cool the hot charge air for moderate to high boost applications. The mounting bosses are .630 inches tall and placed at 19.50 inches and 19.375 inches center-to-center distance. Metric grade 8.8 hardware is supplied, which includes M8-1.25 bolts with zinc plated washers. The hardware provides for top or bottom mounting, however additional user supplied hardware is required if you wish to mount the turbo intercooler kit using all four mounting bosses for maximum mounting stability.
