Make Your 1963-1972 Chevy Truck Safer by Relocating the Fuel Tank

Before they were classics, old Chevy trucks were just workhorses. It was ok for the fuel tank to be behind the seat while hauling hay bales across the farm, and a couple hundred horsepower was more than enough to get the job done. Fast forward to today and 60’s-70’s Chevy trucks are full-fledged classics that are getting the same custom treatment as early Camaros and Chevelles. These custom rebuilds often feature dramatic suspension modifications, custom interiors, and huge power from modern fuel injected engines. And they get driven, often blasting down the freeway in modern traffic with distracted late-model drivers buzzing all around. That crusty old tank behind the seat full of sloshing fuel isn’t looking so good anymore. TwoLane™ EFI Under Bed Fuel Tanks relocate the tank to a safer location and are ready for modern in-tank pumps to fuel EFI powerplants from mild to wild.

Frame Specific Dimensions Ensures a Perfect Fit Under the Bed of Your Pickup

Moving the fuel tank to the rear of your pickup under the truck’s pickup box/bed floor provides several benefits. The most obvious of course is removing the liquid fuel storage from inside the passenger compartment where a ruptured tank, separated fuel line or filler hose in an accident can cover the occupants with gasoline. Moving the fuel tank to the rear not only provides a higher level of safety but places a good bit of weight at the rear of the pickup, which aids in traction. On average you’re looking at roughly 100 pounds of weight with a full truck bed fuel tank. Relocating the fuel tank also provides a bit more cabin storage room, or space for audio gear, road trip tools, and so forth. For 67-72 truck owners we even offer a fuel filler delete panel to cover your factory filler hole in your truck’s cab.

We have designed our under bed aluminum and stainless fuel tanks to mount between the frame rails for a perfect fit behind the rear axle assembly. This is not a universal fuel tank requiring modification to fit your truck. The 27-inch wide truck bed gas tank is made from either .090" aluminum or 14-gauge stainless and are fully TIG welded for a strong assembly. An internal full height baffle reduces fuel slosh and keeps the pickup tube immersed in fuel. Generous 2-inch wide and 8-inch long mounting flanges on each end (for a total width of 31 inches) fit within your truck’s frame rails. Final placement is directed via the factory rear crossmember and all you must do is drill your own mounting holes and bolt the tank in (hardware not supplied).

Fabricated, TIG welded aluminum looks trick, but might look out of place on some trucks. With that in mind, these tanks are also available in black anodized and stainless steel. The black tanks are subtle and will blend in with the other finishes under the truck, while the stainless lends a high-end touch to complement the rest of the shiny stuff throughout the truck.

Ready for Modern EFI Power

These days, lots of classic trucks need more from their fuel system than just a tank relocation. In place of those old stock small blocks and utilitarian 6-cylinders are upgraded late model engines with EFI and lots of power. Some even have power adders like turbos or superchargers and they need way more fuel than those ho-hum original engines ever did. These tanks are up to the job with an integrated ring to mount in-tank EFI pumps with the common 12-bolt, 5.375” bolt circle. There are quite a few advantages of an in-tank pump design. That’s why the OE’s have been using them for decades. Particularly critical at high power levels is the cooling effect of the fuel in the tank on the pumps. Additionally, the surrounding fuel helps isolate the sound of the pumps. Spend any time in a truck with a big external pump bolted to the frame and you’ll appreciate the relative silence of in-tank pumps. Internal pumps also serve to clean up the plumbing, minimizing fittings and potential leak sources when compared to external pumps.

The 1-1/2-inch diameter filler neck uses standard filler neck hose and allows you to install your choice of fuel filler cap/door in the floor of your truck’s bed.

These tanks are designed to fit common aftermarket EFI pump modules, but are also available in complete kits featuring trick TwoLane™ EFI In-Tank Fuel Pump Modules in various levels to fuel whatever it under the hood of your truck.
