Proper Placement of Your Small Block Chevy Engine Swap in ’63-’72 Chevy or GMC Trucks
Chevrolet’s first and second generation C10 pickup trucks are some of the most popular fodder for all manner of build ideas. From patina’d cruisers to billet everything pro tourers, these trucks have a massive following that is hard to miss at most any automotive event you will attend. No matter what the build plans are, one thing is for certain, most owners are quick to ditch the original inline-six workhorse for the tried-and-true performance and looks of the Gen 1 small block Chevy V8. While it is true that the small block Chevy V8 will bolt up to the inline-six frame mounts, it is far from an ideal solution in most cases. Let’s discuss why.
You see the inline-six frame mounts place the SBC engine too high and too far rearward. This can cause driveline angle issues, transmission to tunnel issues with larger modern overdrive transmissions, and is especially problematic for the small block Chevy’s rear of block distributor location. Upgrading to GM’s HEI-style distributor is nearly impossible when placing a small block Chevy in the engine bay using inline-six frame mounts in the stock location, as there simply isn’t enough room between the rear of the SBC V8 and the firewall. Lastly, there is the issue of most tubular headers interfering with the large, stamped steel inline-six engine frame mounts as well. Even some low-mount alternators or front accessory drive setups may interfere with these stamped frame mounts. The fix? A C10 engine mount bracket that provides the strength and correct mounting points required in a smaller, low-profile package.
Laser Cut, Press Bent, And Welded for Strength and Precision Fitment
Stampings get their strength from bends and angles formed in the stamping process. This is why a stamped frame member is stronger than a flat sheet of steel with the same gauge thickness. However, this comes at a cost, with that cost being the overall size of the stamping. This is not an issue with an inline-six engine, but once you add a V8, having a smaller frame mount bracket is necessary. Our C10 small block Chevy frame mount brackets start off as sheets of 7-gauge steel (that’s 3/16-inch). This steel is precisely cut via laser to produce the smallest and lightest part possible, bent on computer controlled benders, and then fully welded for increased strength and given a satin black powder coat finish that provides long lasting looks and corrosion protection.
Designed to fit 1963-1972 Chevy 1/2-ton, 3/4-ton, and 1-ton 2WD pickups, known as the C10, C20, and C30, these TorqLink™ frame mount brackets will also fit GMC trucks of the same payload ratings (C1500, C2500, and C3500). Additionally, these can be used as ’67-’72 C10 motor mounts for these year GM SUVs that share frame components, including the Blazer, Jimmy, and Suburban models. The brackets include new 3/8-inch grade 8 mounting hardware with nylon locking nuts and 7/16-inch through bolt hardware to secure your C10 motor mounts to these brackets. All you need to finish the job is a set of C10 engine mounts (we highly recommend the Prothane motor mounts for small block Chevys) and a motor mount to engine block bolt kit.
Slotted mounting holes in these TorqLink™ motor mount brackets provide room for frame manufacturing tolerance stack up for a true bolt in conversion with no grinding or cutting required for installation. Best of all, no matter the generation of small block Chevy you are working with everything simply bolts together for an easy swap. Add our TorqLink transmission crossmember for 67-72 C10s or our TorqLink universal transmission crossmember for 66 and earlier trucks to create a complete engine and transmission swap solution for your pickup truck. And if you’re considering an LS swap in your truck, simply add these frame mounts and the C10 motor mounts mentioned above, along with our LS adapter brackets to create bolt in LS motor mounts for C10 applications.
