Excellent Quality but Difficult to Use

This is a well-made, high-quality accessory that follows a "simple but effective" design approach. It is much more difficult to use than it needs to be, however, and I gave it an Average rating for that reason. The first problem I encountered was that the smaller rods won't slide into the longer stainless tubing. Even after drilling out the tubing with a 3/8" drill bit - a difficult task in itself - the smaller rods wouldn't go in without binding. I eventually had to turn them down several thousandths on a lathe to be sure they wouldn't get stuck in the tubes during adjustment. The second issue has to do with the need to drill and tap the tubing for setscrews. Because the tubes are stainless, I found it necessary to first grind a small flat along the side of the tubing so the drill bit could bite without sliding off the crown. After that, the holes themselves required a drill press and lots of care. Bottom line: this installation is probably not for the average home mechanic. I needed a 1/2" electric drill, 3/8" drill bit, bench vise (necessary to hold the rod while drilling to 3/8"), drill press with table clamp, small grinding wheel, and a lathe. I recommend this product due to its excellent price/performance ratio, but with the aforementioned caveats.

I think these are necessary due to the wind forces even on the 14" inch windshield. I used the additional center rear view mirror mounts and placed on the sides and ran a 1/4" bolt thru then bent the bolt to a 90 to mount to the windshield

I've been doing this for the last 5 T Bucket builds and thought I'd pass it along. I read below where one fellow was having trouble drilling and taping the stainless steel rods. First toss the shorter pieces into your scrap metal bin. All that is required is to measure the length needed for the longer rod and allow for a 7/16 RH HEIM joint with a 3/8 hole to go into the open end. Measure again and cut to length. Drill out the open end, that you just cut, with a 3/8 bit far enough to allow a 7/16-20 tap to go deep enough to insert the HEIM joint male threaded end. When finished, you still have over an inch of adjustment in both directions to fasten to the center (3/8 stud) windshield hinge. A 3/8 HEIM spacer (Speedway part number 9600604) may be required to clear the hinge depending on the angle and where the lower rods are attached to. Take your time drilling and taping and use cutting oil (Tap Magic or equivalent) and sharp tools. The Speedway part number for the HEIM joints is 1170809.

Although this looks good on my T-Bucket and is a necessary feature for highways, it could have come with some more info. It's straight forward where it attaches to the windshield frame but the other end - not so much. Once again it is the research part that is required.

what locks the smaller rod into the larger rod? I see someone had to drill a set screw, but is that the recommended procedure?

My support rod has a threaded clevis at the windshield post that installs on that threaded rod that connects to the headlight support via a hole in the flattened rod. The clevis has a hole that connects to a windshield stud with a nut to hold it in place.
