Mustang II Tubular Control Arms VS Stock Stamped Arms
The Mustang II may be the oft maligned second generation of Ford’s Pony car, but if there is one thing Ford got right when building it was the front suspension. The Mustang II’s compact independent front suspension (IFS) design meant it could fit into many narrow frame hot rods to replace their stock straight axle front ends. With a little careful measuring and welding, a hot rodder could add the Mustang II front suspension with better suspension geometry, modern tube shocks, disc brakes, and rack-and-pinion steering in one relatively simple project. Once the word got out the hot rod suspension industry took off with all manner of weld-in or bolt-in Mustang II crossmembers to allow adding the popular Mustang II front suspension to just about anything. Soon, full Mustang 2 front suspension kit offerings arrived on the scene.
As the Mustang II suspension conversion gained popularity there was one main issue that arose, and that was the flimsy stamped steel Mustang II control arms. These stock arms were designed for the weight of the Mustang II chassis and were often called into supporting much heavier cars when a Mustang II IFS kit was added. They also didn’t handle high speed cornering very well, such as autocross events or spirited driving, as the stamped steel would flex under these loads and corning forces. The aftermarket once again came to the rescue with strong tubular steel control arms that virtually eliminated the issue. Upgrading to Mustang II tubular control arms (both upper and lower) is a huge step forward in performance for the Mustang II suspension family.
Mustang II Control Arm Dimensions
Our Mustang II tubular lower control arms feature .120-inch wall thickness 1.25-inch OD steel tubing construction for maximum strength and minimal deflection when compared to the OEM-style stamped steel lower control arm with strut rod that it replaces. With the included weld on spacer and mounting hardware, our Mustang II lower control arms install easily in place of your stamped steel arms, eliminating the strut rods and their soft bushings for better handling and steering control. The included screw-in ball joint provides easy future servicing/replacement and features factory ball joint stud taper dimensions to work with both stock and drop Mustang II spindles.
Are Tubular Control Arms Worth It?
Upgrading from your stock stamped steel Mustang II lower control arms to the higher strength Mustang II tubular lower control arms we offer provide the user with multiple spring options. While these Mustang II lower control arms are for standard coil spring and shock fitments, we also have lower Mustang II tubular control arms for coilover setups, or even air spring mounts.
Mustang II Tubular Control Arm Installation Notes
Our tubular Mustang II lower control arms have traditionally been available in bare steel, which require complete disassembly for powder coating or extensive tape masking to simply paint them with your favorite spray paint. Speedway Motors’ powder coated Mustang II control arms provide an easier and more cost-effective option for those looking to upgrade their existing Mustang II IFS kit or building a custom Mustang II front suspension package piece-by-piece. This rich powder coated finish not only saves you time, since these control arms can literally go right from the shipping box to your Mustang II front end, but provide superior protection against corrosion that spray paint simply cannot match. Upgrade your Mustang II front end conversion with our tubular arms and see just how much better your hot rod or muscle car rides!
