Flow Valve

It is common to use an early GM power steering pump with a Mustang II power rack and pinion. Most who have tried it have found that the steering was twitchy or that it easily darts. This valve will replace the existing fitting in the back of the early GM power steering pump and reduces the fluid flow from three gallons-per-minute to two gallons-per-minute, which cures the problem. For applications using the O-ring style power steering hoses (use in conjunction with adapter insert # 910-32921 for inverted flare hose application). Installs in the back side of the pump (see above illustration pictures).

If converting pump from modern 16mm o-ring to traditional 5/8" inverted flare style hoses and utilizing this pressure reducer adapter fitting, use this fitting in conjunction with the following adapter insert and order (1) Adapter Insert 910-32921.

Fitting thread size Information:

  • Pump Side: 3/4-16 Male (O-Ring Seal)
  • Hose Side: 16mm-1.5 Female (O-Ring Seal)

Inverted Flare

If you have a power steering pump using late model style O-ring sealed hoses that you need to adapt to traditional inverted flare hoses, this inverted flare adapter is a simple fix. Simply insert the adapter into the flow control fitting and then install your inverted flare hose.

Use to convert from 16mm o-ring to 5/8" inverted flare style.

Taming a Cobra

My Cobra was all over the road with over active steering. It has a Mustang II steering box with a Saginaw steering pump. This valve reduced pressure to where the steering is now comfortable.

Check before you buy

I have a Borgeson power steering conversion on my 65 Mustang and like many think the steering is a bit twitchy and would like to reduce the amount of assist. However, the flow valve in my pump has the same orifice diameter (3mm) as this flow valve has, so there is no way this valve will reduce the flow out of the pump for me. Others, may have a different sized valve, so it's worth checking the orifice diameter of the valve you already have. My strategy is now to use the Borgeson spring kit 899001 to try to reduce the pressure. Speedway promptly refunded my order.
