Increase Your Gen IV LS Engine’s Reliability With an AFM/DOD Delete
It is widely known that the Gen IV LS family of V8s gets a bad rap for its Active Fuel Management/Displacement on Demand feature. This technology uses special lifters, solenoids, oil passages, and of course electronics, to disable four of the eight cylinders during certain driving events, such as steady rpm cruising on the highway. This is accomplished by shutting down oil pressure to these specialized lifters, which prevents the valves from operating. With the valves shut (and the injectors shut off), the cylinders do not create any power and the piston and rod in each cylinder is basically “along for the ride.”
The issue falls mainly with the special lifters, though there is some argument that extended oil change intervals and/or the wrong oil viscosity plays some role in these failures as well. None the less, the majority of those swapping an LS into their classic muscle car, hot rod, or pickup truck are looking to keep things simple and most importantly, dependable. That is where an AFM/DOD delete kit comes into play. We offer delete kits for Gen IV 5.3L and 6.0L engines that have everything you need to eliminate this troublesome aspect of the Gen IV LS engine. But we often know enthusiasts already have some of their delete components due to purchasing a performance cam and lifters for example. In this case you might only need the LS valley cover that blocks off the oil passages to the lifters.
A Precision CNC Machined LS Valley Cover Manufactured from 6060-T651 Aluminum
If you’re going through the effort of upgrading your Gen IV LS engine’s internals with a performance camshaft, or adding an aftermarket intake, etc. then an AFM/DOD delete is going to be a part of that. And who wants to use some cast LS valley cover when you can add a bit of styling with a CNC machined DOD delete valley cover? Our AFM/DOD delete style LS valley cover is made from 6061-T651 aluminum sheet and CNC machined for a perfect fit. The DOD delete valley cover provides additional styling with flush fitting M8 metric Allen head hardware, a billet CNC machined oil pressure fitting adapter, and of course the ever stylish Speedway Motors “S” logo laser engraved at the front of the LS valley plate.
We offer the LS valley plate in bare aluminum (perfect for powder coating or painting along with your engine block) or in anodized aluminum black. The oil pressure adapter and hardware match the main DOD delete valley plate finish too. This is the perfect solution for blocking off the oil pressure to the AFM/DOD lifters in your 11-bolt Gen IV LS, including LS2, LS3, LS7, L92, L76, LC9, and other Gen IV LS engines from car and truck applications. All fasteners are included, as is the O-ring for the oil pressure adapter fitting, but you will need a LS valley cover gasket and O-ring set to complete the installation (we do not recommend reusing the factory gasket and O-rings). Installation of our DOD delete valley cover is no different than installing the stock LS valley cover with no modifications to the engine block required.
