While the use of a parking brake, or emergency brake as some people refer to them as, has been in use for over 100 years of automobile production now, when it comes to custom vehicles that have been modified it isn’t often easy to incorporate usable parking brake functionality. For some vehicles there is little to no room for an under-dash parking brake pedal mount. Same goes for a small car like a ’32 Ford or a T-bucket with a bench seat and trying to utilize some sort of transmission tunnel mounted pull handle. For others it could be the conversion from factory drum brakes to rear disc brakes, or the use of a custom frame, mini-tubbing a car, or any other modifications where the factory cable mounting brackets and cable path may no longer be an option. The solution to all of this? A conversion using our universal electric parking brake kit.

Much like the electric parking brake (often called an EPB) found in newer vehicles, the electric parking brake conversion kit features a simple on/off control using a push button to engage and disengage the system. Overall, it is an easy system to work into a custom vehicle build, is universal in nature so it will work on any hot rod, muscle car, or classic truck (and most any drum or disc parking brake setup), can be frame or body mounted out of the way, and the activation button can be dash mounted or mounted in a discreet location to double as a security system. We’ve packaged the E-Stopp electronic parking brake system along with a cable junction bracket and a universal parking brake cable kit to provide everything you need for full parking brake functionality that will hold any vehicle safely and pass any state vehicle inspection that requires a functioning parking brake.

Simple To Use Electric Emergency Brake System with Pushbutton Activation

The E-Stopp electric emergency brake system, a NSRA new safety product of the year award winner, uses a pushbutton activated controller to apply and release your disc or drum parking brake setup. This pushbutton visually confirms activation by blinking as the brake is applied or released. The button is a latching type, meaning when you push to activate the button latches, holding the button in. Pushing the button to release the brake unlatches the button, allowing it to be flush with the mounting ring again. While not a physical part of the button, there is a speaker module included that beeps during activation of the pushbutton to audibly denote the application or release of the parking brake system. The button requires a single 7/8-inch hole to be drilled and the button has a detachable cable, allowing the button to be fitted from the front of the panel for a clean look.

Rugged and Waterproof Actuator Assembly Mounts Almost Anywhere

The included linear actuator assembly is weatherproof and can be mounted under the vehicle where it can be exposed to wet conditions without issue. This allows one to mount the actuator on the frame rail or body structure where suited best to provide an even pull for both left and right parking brake cables using the included cable junction bracket. The only caveat here is to keep the unit away from direct heat sources, so be sure to not mount it directly over a muffler or other hot exhaust or engine component. The actuator’s mounting bracket is slotted to provide additional adjustment over the adjustable brake cable that is attached to the actuator. Mounting hardware is not included, so depending on your installation you may use through bolts, drill and tap directly into your frame, or use thread inserts. Thread locking compound is highly suggested by E-Stopp for mounting.

The included electronic control module must be installed in the cabin (we suggest under the dash or front of console if room allows). Wiring is quite simple with just four wires to connect. The heavy red and black wires connect directly to your battery, while the blue wire connects to your ignition switch to only allow use of the E-Stopp parking brake when the key is off. If you opt to not connect this wire know that the E-Stopp CAN be activated with the engine running and the vehicle moving, acting more like an emergency brake than a parking brake. Lastly, the green wire is the module’s output to any dash indicator showing the parking brake is set/activated. This light is often required for state inspections. Any number of LED indicator lamps will work for this function.

The system uses no power when active (only when the actuator is applying or releasing the brakes) so there is no need to worry about the system pulling down your battery when the parking brake is set. Note, however, that if your battery should die while the E-Stopp is active there is no manual release. You will need to manually power the E-Stopp emergency brake actuator with a jumper battery, or we highly recommend a battery jump box to get you back on the road.

Universal Parking Brake Cables Work with Most Disc or Drum Parking Brake Assemblies

Included in our complete electronic parking brake kit is a set of our universal 108-inch black plastic covered parking brake cables. This kit includes cut-to-length cables with aluminum end ferrules, threaded cable adjusters, retaining clamps, and adapters for use with Ford Explorer-style rear disc conversions and most Wilwood rear disc conversions. These cables pair perfectly with the included 10-gauge steel cable junction bracket to provide a clean mounting solution that pulls on both rear brake assemblies equally. The junction bracket mounts via four 1/4-inch holes (mounting fasteners not included due to the varied mounting options) and is 7-3/8-inches long, allowing it to be mounted on your vehicle’s frame or body between the rear parking brake cables and the E-Stopp actuator unit.

Note: The unit has a one touch button and does not have a variable dial. Once the button is pressed the brakes are locked on to serve as a parking brake and also a theft deterrent in some cases. Wiring in a different switch to control the activation rate would void the warranty.
