There’s something special about that point in your project vehicle’s progression when you finally set your engine and transmission down on the mounts to be bolted in for the final time. All that mock up work, welding, and “where did I leave the tape measure?” moments are behind you and now you can focus on wiring and plumbing so you can twist that key and hear your creation come to life. No matter the type of vehicle or how much room you have in the engine bay, dropping that engine into place (especially if you have the transmission hanging off the back of it) can be a stressful and potentially unsafe bit of shop work. However, it doesn’t have to be stressful or unsafe if you’re using the correct engine lift equipment.

Obviously, you need an engine hoist to raise and lower the engine, transfer it from your engine stand over to the vehicle, and so forth. Where the issue for many is just how to attach their engine to the cherry picker. The most basic is an engine sling made from a length of chain mounted from front to back of the engine, usually diagonally across the way from the corner of each cylinder head. It works, but if you don’t place the engine hoist hook in just the right chain link, frustration sets in, and you must start all over. An engine lift plate is a decent plan, but what if you have no intake manifold installed or you’re dropping in a modern EFI engine like an LS, Coyote, or Gen III Hemi? We’ve seen more than a few sketchy attempts in our lives (pull the front tires and drop the front end, jack up the rear end to put the vehicle on a better “approach angle,” etc.).
