Enhance Your Turbocharged Tuning Ability by Converting to An External Wastegate

Turbocharger wastegates control the bypass of exhaust gas flow entering the turbo. This control is typically handled by boost pressure, either referenced directly from the turbo compressor housing, or through some sort of boost controller. By alleviating some of the exhaust gas pressure you can control the amount of boost the turbo is capable of. The typical external wastegate works off spring pressure (with the springs being the tunable portion of the wastegate). Boost pressure is applied to the wastegate and when it exceeds the spring pressure the valve opens, allowing the exhaust gas to bypass the turbine, therefore controlling the turbo’s rpm and boost levels.

The popular T3 and T3/T4 hybrid turbochargers feature an internal wastegate assembly, however. While this internal wastegate with 5-bolt turbo flange helps with packaging efforts, the internal design is not without its detractions. The valve is obviously a fixed size due to being internally mounted, plus it can be slow to react to boost pressures. The internal bypass design is also known to cause turbulence within the turbo housing, increasing turbo lag and generating more heat as well. The solution? Converting your T3 or T3/T4 hybrid 5-bolt turbo flange internal wastegate to an external wastegate flange that allows you to run a larger, tunable, external wastegate on your turbocharged setup.

5-Bolt T3/T4 Turbo External Wastegate Bolt-On Flange Makes Conversion Easy

Our 5-bolt external wastegate adapter for the T3/T4 turbo is machined from high grade stainless steel. With a thick .518” main body, it uses standard 5-bolt T3 turbo exhaust flange gaskets for easy servicing when needed and stands up to the high heat and pressures found in today’s performance turbocharger systems. We have welded a high quality 2.50-inch V-band flange to the adapter body, providing for a leak free assembly using a standard 2.50-inch V-band clamp. This allows you to build out your turbo’s turbine housing inlet in 2.50-inch tubing and add your external wastegate wherever it works best for your application and fitment.

Our T3/T4 turbo option is setup for the standard 5-bolt T3 turbo exhaust flange and is the perfect turbo for small displacement turbo builds up to 500 horsepower. Add our stainless steel 5-bolt external wastegate adapter, an external wastegate, and a blow off valve to control intake boost pressures on closed throttle, and you’re well on your way to a custom turbo setup that is completely tunable for the boost level and horsepower you’re wishing to achieve.
