Increase The Handling of Your 3rd Gen F-Body with A Bolt-On Splined Sway Bar Upgrade
The 1980s were, for the most part, a tough time to be a car enthusiast. Once powerful V8 engines were severely underpowered for the time thanks to emissions components and other restrictive changes. Things would get better towards the end of the decade (can you say Fox body Mustang or Buick Grand National?) but the ever popular 3rd Gen Camaro and Firebird lineup would be saddled with an emissions carburetor or throttle body EFI for most of the decade. If you did option the more powerful 350 TPI engine GM would equip it with a mandatory automatic transmission. Dark times indeed.
What the 3rd Gen F-Body cars did have going for them was unique styling, decent handling (for the time), and available four-wheel disc brakes (which the Mustang wouldn’t see in mass production until 1994). The suspension and braking would help these cars stay out front in many factory spec class racing series. Today, the 3rd Gen Camaro and Firebird are quickly becoming a hot car again for their nostalgic throw back styling as ’80s kids are now of the age to afford a project car. The 3rd Gen F-Body is only a simple LS swap and five-speed manual away from being a potent performance car, but the aging suspension can really use some help. Tubular control arms, coilover struts and shocks, and more are a great solution, but upgraded sway bars are the perfect first step in your F-body’s suspension evolution.
Three Piece Front Sway Bar That Provides Additional Clearance for Wide Front Tires
Both stock and aftermarket tubular sway bar kits can only reach a certain bend radius before affecting the structural integrity of the bar stock the sway bar is made from. These bends can interfere when running wider rubber up front on your ’82-’92 Third Gen Camaro or Firebird. Upgrading to a three piece sway bar design allows the sway bar arms to be tight to the frame rail, providing more turning radius for those wider tires you want to run. So now, when you’re looking to update your wheel and tire package and want to run that modern performance rubber up front your Camaro sway bar will no longer be the limiting factor in how wide a front tire you can run.
Strong Steel Splined Sway Bar Rides in Delrin Bushings Within a Tubular Frame Support
Most aftermarket sway bar kits mount directly to the factory mounting points on the front frame rails. There are some model years and performance packages (like the IROC Z Camaro) that GM installed a steering support brace to which the Camaro sway bar mounted to. This brace was incorporated on certain cars to strengthen the steering box mounting to the left frame rail and prevent stress cracking/flexing during hard cornering. We felt it was an important aspect to have on a 3rd Gen F-Body with wide and sticky rubber that’s going to be tossed into corners. As such, we came up with a 1-3/4-inch 1020 mild steel tube with CNC cut and jig welded end plates that pulls double duty as a steering/frame brace (often referred to as a “wonderbar”) and the mount for the splined sway bar. Delrin bushings are affixed at each end to support the 1-1/4-inch diameter splined bar. Your ’82-’92 Third Gen Camaro or Firebird will not only benefit from increased front frame stiffness and reduced steering play, but our stiffer sway bar will keep your F-body planted in the corners too.
A Direct Bolt-On Upgrade for Your 1982-1992 3rd Gen Camaro or Firebird
We designed our sway bar mounting/frame stiffener to use the staggered Firebird and Camaro sway bar mounting bolt pattern that was used from mid-1982 through the end of production in 1992. Simply remove your factory Firebird or Camaro sway bar and steering brace (if equipped) and bolt on the sway bar mounting tube/frame brace using your original hardware. Finally, assemble your sway bar and attach the adjustable end links to your lower control arms. Early 1982 models use an inline sway bar mounting bolt pattern, which our sway bar kit’s mounting system will not directly bolt to. You do have the option to modify the mounting bolt pattern as needed, but for these early 1982 models we generally do not recommend doing so unless you are familiar with frame modifications and welding.

Very well designed and built sway bar. This design integrates the sway bar and wonder bar into one piece. The sway bar piece is splined on both ends and is located in a tube with delrin bushings. The tube replaces the wonder bar. The arms use rod ends to connect to the control arms. I replaced the rod ends with units from QA1 as the ones included in the box are a little sloppy. I would recommend this for road racing or auto-x. Needs to be painted.
