Easily Add Disc Brakes to Your 64-72 GM A-Body, 67-69 F-Body, or 68-74 X-Body

Many a classic GM muscle car left the factory with four-wheel drum brakes with disc brakes as an option box that was rarely checked (if even available!). With today’s traffic speeds and congestion, driving anywhere requires not only your undivided attention, but modern levels of handling and braking to ensure you can maneuver around traffic/obstacles and stop your ride in time compared to the car with modern braking that just slammed on their brakes in front of you. The easiest option for many is to upgrade the front drum brakes on their GM muscle car to disc. What used to take scouring junk yards for suitable disc brake spindles to perform the swap is now something you can order from Speedway Motors and have on your doorstep in a few days. Couple these Chevy spindles with our matching disc brake conversion kit and you will have everything you need for a complete “at the wheels” disc brake setup.

Forged Steel for Strength, Stock Dimensions and Ride Height for Bolt-On Ease

We know that many muscle car owners have already updated their front suspension with lowering springs, coilovers, or other bits to get the ride height they desire. So, creating a standard drop spindle arrangement isn’t warranted in this case. We designed our GM spindle to replicate the stock GM spindle dimensions in all aspects including pin height, overall height, ball joint taper, and steering arm mounting points to allow this spindle to be a direct fit to your GM muscle car no matter what suspension modifications you have already employed. Simply remove your drum brake-spec Chevelle spindle and bolt up our disc brake-spec spindle.

The 4.125-inch (4-1/8-inch) center-to-center steering arm mounting holes match the original Camaro spindles, allowing you to simply transfer your steering arms over to your new spindles. However, if your steering arms are missing or seen better days, we do offer the popular “mid-length” power steering arms for 67-69 Camaro/Firebird and 68-74 Chevy II/Nova. Don’t forget new hardware too. You’ll need four 1/2-20 by 3-inch-long Grade 8 bolts and four 1/2-20 Grade 8 stover lock nuts (we don’t recommend nylon insert lock nuts). You’ll also need a spindle nut kit if your current hardware is damaged or missing.

Much like a forged crankshaft that creates a stronger engine foundation, we have our Chevy spindles made from forged steel for the same reasons, creating a solid foundation for your suspension and braking components. The superior strength of a forging means less deflection in hard cornering, which also puts a lot of stress on the GM A-Body spindle pin (the part that the brake rotor spins on). Castings can crack and fail under hard stress, whereas a forging’s densely aligned grain structure increases the strength at the cost of more difficult manufacturing. Cast Chevy spindles are also generally heavier than forged spindles, adding unnecessary weight to the suspension and braking systems as well. These spindles are ready to install as soon as you pull them out of the box. They can be painted or powder coated before installation if you wish. Simply bolt up your new forged GM steering spindles and get to work converting your ride to disc brakes!

Spindles fit nicely on my '67 Chevelle

I am upgrading from drum to disc brakes on the front & these fit perfect with the speedway upgrade kit for discs. It says stock drum spindles wouldn't fit the kit so I had to buy these. Good thing I did though because stock lower ball joint from almost 50 years of pounding on the lower control arms would not budge with about an hour of trying to get out.

Not quite right

Spoke with the Speedway tech who deduced these spindles as the correct spindles to use as OEM for my 66 Chevy II SS. Unfortunately once unboxed the lower spindle hole slid right over the lower ball joint. Speedway was great about taking the product back. I found the correct spindles elsewhere in the mean time.

What I didn't know, until I got the instructions, is that I could shorten up the casting of my existing spindle 0.61" and reuse them. I'll do that the next time and save $160.
