Improve Your Chevelle or Other A-Body’s Handling with a Bolt-On Control Arm Upgrade

Your Chevelle, GTO, Olds 442, or other A-body utilize the same front suspension configuration mounted to a perimeter frame. The production front upper and lower control arms use traditional stamped steel assemblies fitted with a coil spring and a shock absorber for dampening. These pieces provided a fairly decent ride 50 plus years ago on bias-ply tires. However, today’s world is vastly different. We want our muscle cars to handle, fit big disc brakes, and wide sticky rubber. These stock stamped steel control arms can literally flex and fail under the cornering and braking forces applied to them, especially in a track environment. The last thing any enthusiast wants is a part failure that could potentially cause damage to their pride and joy (or worse, cause injuries). Updating your GM pony car with Speedway Motors’ beefy Chevelle tubular control arms strengthens and enhances your muscle car’s handling.

Tubular Control Arms Resist Flex and Twisting, Improving Handling and Braking over Stamped Control Arms

As we stated earlier, a stamped steel control arm invites lots of sloppiness into your suspension due to flexing and twisting. While a stamping is indeed stronger than a flat sheet of metal, tubing is stronger still. So, when creating tubular suspension with steel tubing you greatly increase the rigidity of the product, eliminating that slop from twisting and flexing. What does that mean for you behind the wheel? When it comes to tubular control arms vs stock stamped arms you dive into a corner on our tubular control arms your vehicle will go where you point it to. Getting down on that brake pedal for some extreme braking? Even your brakes will perform better since your tubular control arms aren’t flexing under that hard braking input.

These are the best tubular control arms Chevelle and A-body owners will find and feature a robust 1-5/8-inch diameter tubing for the tubular lower control arms and 1-1/4-inch tubing for the tubular upper control arms, both finished in a show-quality gloss black powder coat. Wall thickness of our tubular steel control arms is .120-inch on both the uppers and the lowers. Due to the thickness and material diameters these GM A body control arms do weigh more than the stock stamped control arms, but the small trade off in unsprung weight for the vast increase in strength makes it worth the small weight penalty.

We have fitted greasable Delrin bushings and OE-spec ball joints to our tubular A arms with easy access grease fittings to make maintenance a breeze. Polyurethane bump stops are included for both upper and lower arm assemblies and these control arms are compatible with stock-style shock absorbers or can be used with aftermarket coilover shocks. Fitting coilover shocks requires removal of the OE-style shock mounting nuts that are welded to the lower control arm spring pocket. We also recommend our coilover reinforcement plate to ensure the coilover shock is properly supported in the Speedway Camaro control arms.

A Direct Bolt-In Solution That Is Easy to Install

Our tubular lower control arm bolts into place using your original control arm’s mounting hardware. If your fasteners have seen better days or went missing don’t worry, we offer a lower control arm bolt kit and lower control arm lock nut kit to keep your project from grinding to a halt. Revised sway bar end links with heim joint ends are included to provide an easy solution to retain your existing sway bar when installing our tubular lower control arms in this kit.

Due to the design of our tubular lower control arms, we highly recommend upgrading to disc brakes, as the drum brake backing plate interferes with the lower control arm and will require major surgery to retain your factory drum brakes up front. Lastly, we built a deep spring pocket in the stock location to allow ride height adjustments by simply adding user-supplied/fabricated shims under the included polyurethane spring pad.

The tubular upper arm in our kit features additional positive caster designed right into the control arm to enhance handling, including high speed stability and cornering. A direct bolt-in solution, we offer a replacement upper control arm mounting bolt and nut kit if your original fasteners should be damaged or have become lost. We also offer a nice alignment shim kit for your upper control arms if your old shims are damaged or you need additional shims to set your alignment to your preferred specifications.

What more could you ask for from a set of bolt-on Speedway tubular control arms like these? Your muscle car gains increased handling, lower ride height, performance bushings with minimal deflection, and more, all without the cost of upgrading to an aftermarket subframe and the major work that entails.

I was impressed

For the price I had to give these a try. I use three other brands of arms on other rides I have. The quality of these rivals the others and those "others" cost twice as much. The end links for the sway bar are very cool. I did not expect to get them so they were a nice surprise. The end links work great! I am going to fab up my own versions for different car I have. The install was straight forward. The only "surprise" was I had to sand one of the bushing surfaces about a 16th of an inch to get the arm ends in the pockets. I do not fault the manufacturer. I have had a few Chevelles an lets just say the tolerances are liberal. The ability to lube the arm bushings is very nice. I have not heard a single squeak from the new bar bushings yet. The quality of the ball-joints could be better. If you drive em hard (auto cross)then I would upgrade them for sure. The alignment shop had no issues; there are less shims now than before the install. The ride quality is dramatically different. Factor in the geometry changes in the arms, coil over upgrade, 18 inch wheels, and 40 series tires. Went form that 70s ride feel to something more modern. Still squeaks and rattles like a 70s car!

Dangerous at any speed

Put a set of these on my 67 cutlass. Looked good, heavy construction, affordable price. Lower ball joint failed in less than 100 miles causing vehicle to plow strait into a guard rail. Car is wrecked but fortunetly no one killed or injured. Now I know your thinking this guy probably didn't know what he was doing right. I am an ASE certified master tech with 30 years of experience. The last 27 have been working on cop cars that routinely get abused. I have probably installed over a hundred lower ball joints in my life without a single issue......till now. If you buy these I strongly recommend replacing ball joints with Moog parts. Not Speedways fault, but a defect in the quality of a sub part that was used in its construction.

These are really great value for the money. I work in manufacturing and it's scary to see how good the overseas stuff is starting to get. These thankfully are designed in the US and quality control seems to be great as I'm extremely satisfied with the fit of these and how robust the design is. Looks like they will hold up well for a street car. I was tempted to replace the balljoints, but after working them and greasing them I think they apprear to be as good as most of the autoparts store joints so time will tell. With the G-comp spindles it looks like 4.5* of castor will be a breeze without too many shims. Haven't driven on them yet but with them assembled and the car on the ground with weight on them I'm sure they will be great.

These worked great. As a lot of others I had to move the passenger lower rear A arm mounting tab a little bit with a hammer but wasn't to bad.

my car (67 chevelle) was never in an accident, never seen snow, and we had to heat with torch mounting pockets on frame and manipulate them a little to make lower arms fit properly... these are old cars! Unless you know what your getting into, this is not a job for a novice, I have a friend who is a body and frame guy tweaking the mounting pockets, 10 hours with food and beer breaks.... but WOW, worth it!

I would look more closely at the lower arms.

When installed the lower control arm grease fittings are not accessible, seem to be drilled in the wrong spot to be able to grease them.
