It’s been seven decades since the ’55 Chevy rolled off the assembly line and to this day it is still one of the most popular ’50s cars. Sought after by enthusiasts of all ages, the idea of cruising a Tri-Five Chevy is what keeps these cars in the limelight. However, for many, the enthusiasm often wanes on the first drive when the new owner experiences 1950s suspension and braking technology. These cars are severely outdated in the handling department, having been manufactured with stamped steel control arms that flex and can even fail along with basic hydraulic shock absorbers. To achieve better handling and provide a platform for modern wheel and tire packages and even disc brake conversions that make the Tri-Five much safer and agile on today’s roads, a modern ’55 Chevy front suspension must be fitted.
Stamped Versus Tubular, The Benefits of Our Control Arms Are Obvious
As we stated earlier, a stamped steel control arm invites lots of sloppiness into your suspension due to flexing and twisting. While a stamping is indeed stronger than a flat sheet of metal, tubing is stronger still. So, when creating ’55 Chevy tubular control arms with steel tubing you greatly increase the rigidity of the product, eliminating that slop from twisting and flexing. Due to the thickness and material diameters these 1955-1957 Chevy full size control arms do weigh more than the stock stamped control arms, but the small trade off in unsprung weight for the vast increase in strength makes it worth the small weight penalty. We have fitted greasable Delrin bushings and OE-spec ball joints to our tubular A-arms with easy access grease fittings to make maintenance a breeze. Polyurethane bump stops are included for both upper and lower control arms as well. We offer alignment shims for your upper control arms if your old shims are damaged or you need additional shims to set your alignment to your preferred specifications.
A Direct Bolt-In Complete Suspension Solution That Is Easy to Install
These 57 Chevy front suspension kits bolt into place using your original control arm’s mounting hardware. Additionally, we have provided a fabricated mounting tab for the included 1-inch front sway bar. The 1-inch solid steel black powder coated bar includes polyurethane end link bushings along with new zinc plated end link hardware and mounting hardware for the sway bar itself. The sway bar compliments the tubular arms in the kit by providing improved cornering that keeps your Tri-Five Chevy flatter in the turns. Drilling of the sway bar mounting holes is required if your ’55-’57 Chevy never came with a front sway bar. Four small holes are required for the frame inserts/U-bolts.
While our tubular arms and sway bar are fully compatible with standard coil springs and shocks, we’ve built this high-value ’55-’57 Chevy front suspension kit with QA1’s 18-way Pro Coil billet aluminum coilover shocks and 450 lb/in springs for optimum handling and a user settable ride height option. Unlike traditional coilovers with a captured top spring collar, which often relies on a shorter/stiffer spring, our Tri-5 Chevy coilover conversion uses a tapered spring that uses the factory coil spring’s upper mount. This provides for a longer, lighter spring in the kit for more stored energy, offering increased weight transfer. This design also offers greater durability by locating the spring pressure into the frame as GM designed and not on a single shock mounting stud. The threaded aluminum body means quick and easy ride height adjustments to get that perfect stance as well. Our tubular control arm coilover reinforcement plates are included in this kit so that your coilover shock loads are supported fully by the lower control arm and not the lower shock mounting nuts like some low-cost coilover kits do.

some frame alterations were necessary as the upper would contact frame in down position not allowing suspension to fully work. have numerous tri-5 installations. never had this issue before. alignment specs were good for the shop to get all angles set properly.
