Product Summary

6061-T6 Aluminum, Purple Anodized

  • Valve springs weaken at different rates - measure your valve spring rates accurately with an easy to use, affordable valve spring rate tester
  • Use in a hydraulic press, a shop vise, or under the quill of a drill press
  • Measures from 20-600psi. Liquid filled gauge prevents the needle vibrating during compression to give a steady, accurate reading
  • Steel piston is machined for a durable, long life of use, housed in an in-house machined, 6061-T6 aluminum housing
  • Works with valve springs of up to 1-1/8" O.D. without retainer. Larger springs will work if using the spring retainer against the piston

  • Economical tool for reliably testing important valve spring rates
  • Valve spring checker is easy to use with hydraulic press (recommended), shop vise or drill press
  • Works directly with valve springs of 1.125” O.D., larger valve springs require the retainer to sit against the piston.
  • In-House machined 6061-T6 aluminum housing, with machined steel piston
  • Liquid filled gauge for precision measurement from 20-600 psi
  • Anodized purple finish

Valve spring rate is important for performance and reliability in your engine. Don’t second guess or assume, check your spring rates easily and economically with our Valve Spring Tester Pressure Checker Gauge Tool.

Valve springs weaken and lose spring rate over time, especially on racing applications where engines see extended high RPM use. Even newer valve springs can show variability and weaken at different rates. Weak valve springs can lead to valve float, inadequate valve sealing, loss of horsepower and torque, and worse – loss of a cylinder or costly engine failure. Whether you’re building a new engine, rebuilding a motor, or maintaining a classic, knowing your valve spring rates is essential for performance and reliability.

Fortunately, testing the valve spring rate is easy and inexpensive. Our valve spring checker gauge tool works with a hydraulic press, or even a shop vise or drill press. The gauge rests directly on top of the valve spring, over a flat surface and reads pressure directly. We manufacture our gauge with an in-house precision CNC-machined 6061-T6, purple anodized aluminum housing and a machined steel piston.  A liquid filled gauge gives you consistent measurement from 20-600 psi, and works directly with valve springs of 1-1/8” outer diameter. Larger diameter springs will work, but requires the spring retainer to sit against the piston.

Need to know your pressures?

Simply remove your valve springs from the head, put spring, cap, and gauge in vice. Measure length at seat pressure, tighten to lift dimension then read the gauge. My cam call for a maximum of #280 at full lift. The heads called out #290 at max lift for springs. My cam lift of .501" came to 250#. Right in the sweet spot for lifters and cam. Cost was good.

I bought this product to test the springs in a j-series Honda engine that I was rebuilding. (Springs were fine) The oil filled gauge makes it easy to read, and its small size means I can stash it away without taking up a ton of room. (I rarely have a need to use this)

I needed an affordable valve spring tester to ck some replacement springs specs with the cam card. I started out using the vise to do the compression but ended up switching to my drill press for better consistency. I'm very satisfied with this piece of equipment and glad to have it on the shelf.
