Convert Your Early Under-Floor Brake Master Cylinder and Mechanical Clutch to Firewall Mount

After OEMs moved away from mechanical brakes and switched over to “juice brakes” most retained the bottom hinged floor mounted pedal box and brake pedal with the then new hydraulic brake master cylinder located under the floor (mounted to the frame via a bracket). Hot rods and pre-1960s cars and trucks that feature the hydraulic brake master cylinder under the floor are not the most user serviceable system. They often require careful hydraulic system consideration, including things like residual pressure valves, since the brake calipers or wheel cylinders are usually mounted higher than the master cylinder.

Eventually, manufacturers relocated the master cylinder up high on the firewall and utilized a top mounted pivot location for the brake pedal. This provided more comfort for the driver and easier service of the brake system with the master cylinder easily accessed under the hood. Many of these vehicles with manual transmission used bulky clutch linkages that required high pedal effort and often get in the way of headers or engine swaps. Our universal firewall mount brake and clutch pedal assembly allows you to convert any vehicle over from a floor mounted pedal box and mechanical clutch linkage to a firewall mount setup that allows hydraulic clutch actuation with a little fabrication effort.

Laser Cut 1/4-inch Steel Plate Construction Supports Manual Brake and clutch Options

Relocating your brake master cylinder to the firewall on a vehicle with under-floor master cylinder requires some fabrication skills, as this is not a direct application specific bolt-on procedure. Our firewall mount brake and clutch pedal assembly is built from 1/4-inch-thick high strength steel sheet and formed to a compact 8-7/16-inches wide by 5-3/16-inches tall. The 13-inch-long brake and clutch pedals are spaced four inches from the firewall mounting surface, feature a 6:1 pedal ratio, and are spaced four inches center-to-center (5-3/4-inch center-to-center on the pedal pad mounting holes). The use of bronze bushings provides smooth operation in our universal pedal assembly. The universal pedal box mount surface includes both standard 3-1/4-inch center-to-center spaced horizontal bolt holes for manual brake master cylinder mounting and 2-1/4-inch center-to-center spaced vertical bolt holes for clutch master cylinder mounting.

Protected by a rich semi-gloss black powder coat finish (we also offer a zinc plated version as well) that compliments any interior, installation of the universal pedal assembly will require careful measuring for placement on your firewall, drilling of mounting holes and master cylinder pushrod pass-thru hole, and possibly reinforcing your firewall with additional material if your firewall is of a thinner gauge steel that will flex under pedal application. For brake master cylinders with included/integral pedal pushrod, a 3/8-inch threaded clevis will be required to attach to the new firewall mounted brake pedal. Additionally, if your choice of master cylinder does not include a pushrod, you’ll need to grab our replacement master cylinder pushrod to use with the previously mentioned clevis. For the clutch master cylinder installation, you’ll need 5/16-inch threaded clevis for proper connection to the clutch pedal as well.

Uses Industry Standard Bolt on Brake and Clutch Pedal Pads For 1/2-inch Mounting Holes

We offer over two dozen bolt-on brake and clutch pedal pad options that makes finishing your firewall-mount brake and clutch pedal conversion a breeze. We also have matching gas pedals you’ll find in both firewall and floor mount options to compliment your new swing mount pedal setup as well. Lastly, if you’re a running an auto trans and don’t need the clutch pedal, don’t worry, we got you covered with our universal fit firewall mount brake pedal assembly option as well that is setup for hydraulic clutch master cylinders (making it a perfect option for those wishing to convert to hydraulic clutch operation too!).
