An EFI Ready Bolt-In Fuel Tank Kit for Your 68-72 Chevelle and 70-72 Monte Carlo
GM’s A-Body vehicles were powered by everything from an inline-six to a massive big-block V-8. But one thing was common amongst all these engine options; they all were fed fuel via a carburetor and a mechanical engine-driven fuel pump. Today, you’d be hard pressed to find any engine running a carburetor other than some small lawn equipment. Electronic fuel injection (EFI) has been standard on GM vehicles since the early 1980s, though many of the early systems would be far from ideal for performance use. Today, aftermarket EFI and some OEM systems with standalone EFI wiring harnesses for retrofits are the norm in most any performance build, be it a muscle car, hot rod, or classic pickup.
To be able to provide the necessary high-pressure fuel required of these modern EFI systems the mechanical fuel pump must be deleted with a block off plate and a high-pressure fuel pump, supply and return lines, and a fuel pressure regulator added to the vehicle for the EFI system to run properly. An early solution was an inline fuel pump mounted on the frame rail. The issue there was fuel tank pickups would often become uncovered during hard cornering and acceleration at low fuel levels, causing driveability issues and stalling. The better solution, as the OEMs certainly found out, was to place the fuel pump directly into the fuel tank itself. The in-tank fuel pump is the preferred EFI fuel pump solution today when converting a hot rod, muscle car, or classic truck over to EFI. Our TwoLane™ direct fit EFI-ready Chevelle fuel tank kit for GM’s A-Body is exactly what you need to run an EFI capable fuel system properly in your ride.
Custom Fabricated Appearance with OEM Fit and Capacity
We have designed our TwoLane™ aluminum and stainless-steel Chevelle gas tanks to mount between the frame rails for a perfect fit behind the rear axle assembly of you’re A-Body, just like your OEM stamped steel tank (does not fit wagon models). This is not a universal Chevelle fuel tank requiring modification to fit your Chevelle, but a direct replacement unit that even includes a new filler neck and stainless-steel mounting straps with hardware. The 37-inch-wide Chevelle gas tank is built from .090-inch-thick aluminum sheet and available in natural or black powder coat finishes. Or you can opt for the .060-inch-thick stainless-steel version. All tanks are fully TIG welded for a strong assembly and pressure tested for leaks. An internal full height baffle reduces fuel slosh and keeps the pickup tube immersed in fuel so that your EFI system stays happy no matter how hard you’re accelerating, braking, or turning. The 37-inch-wide tank dimension allows this TwoLane™ fuel tank to not only fit OEM frames but our G-Comp A-Body frame that has been narrowed to accept wider rear wheel and tire fitments and mini-tubs.
Ready To Supply Your EFI System’s Fuel Needs
With upgrading your Chevelle’s old stock small block with aftermarket EFI or swapping that inline-six with a late model LS engine with EFI and lots of power you need the right fuel supply to keep that EFI happy. These TwoLane™ EFI tank kits are up to the job. Choose from several in-tank fuel pump modules in either single or dual pump configuration. There’s a single 255 LPH and 450 LPH option for N/A applications, and there are dual pump versions for those of you who enjoy boost. The 450 LPH pump is also available as an E85 compatible solution. These modules use the common 12-bolt, 5.375-inch mounting bolt circle and drop right in. This Chevelle fuel tank kit also includes your choice of a 0-90 ohm or 0-33 ohm tube-style 5-bolt fuel level sender. Simply select the one compatible with your gauges (stock fuel level gauge is 0-90 ohms if you’re still rocking the stock dash).
There are quite a few advantages of an in-tank fuel pump design. That’s why the OE’s have been using them for decades. Particularly critical at high power levels is the cooling effect of the fuel in the tank on the pump(s). Additionally, the surrounding fuel helps isolate the sound of the pumps. Spend any time in a muscle car with a big external pump bolted to the frame and you’ll appreciate the relative silence of an in-tank pump submerged in fuel. The 1-1/2-inch diameter filler neck uses standard filler neck hose, included, and connects to the new fuel filler neck also included. Stainless steel mounting straps with installation hardware round out the kit for a bolt-in EFI-ready solution.
