Know Your Tire’s Tread Depth with This Simple and Easy to Use Tool

Time flies right on with our busy lives today. Those new tires you installed “just a few months ago” have really been on your vehicle for almost two years now. Crazy how that’s a revelation when you look back at the installation receipt’s date and realize it. We all know tires are not cheap either. The best way to maintain the life of your tires is to monitor tire pressures and keep the tires aired up in their respective working pressure range for your vehicle’s curb weight. However, even with perfect tire pressures your tires will still see wear from road friction, cornering forces, and of course those accidental clutch slips (wink, wink). Knowing your tire’s actual tread depth is important to understanding remaining tire life and being able to pass state vehicle safety inspections if your state mandates such things. Pick up a tire tread depth gauge and know exactly how much tire life you have left.

A tire tread depth gauge is a simple tool that is easy to use that provides an accurate measurement of your tire’s tread depth. While your dad or granddad might have used the old Lincoln’s head on a penny trick as a simple “go-no go” gauge, having actual measurements is preferred. A tire depth gauge facilitates this by simply placing the base of the tool across the tread blocks and pushing the tire tread depth tool’s measuring stem into the void between the tread blocks to measure. The minimum legal tread depth is usually 2/32nds of an inch, or roughly 1.6mm (but check your state to be sure) and most tire manufacturers recommend replacement at 4/32nds. Our tread depth gauge allows for quick tire tread depth measurements right on the vehicle in just a few minutes to tackle all four tires.

Made from stainless steel and plastic, our lightweight tire tread gauge tool is ready to go at a moment's notice thanks to its sturdy pocket clip and displays dual measurement tire wear gauge scales, one in millimeters and one in 32nds of an inch. The tread depth indicator measurement scale also features a color-coded safety measurement guide for a quick visual identification of your tire’s remaining life. Green (safe) is from 4.76 mm to 25 mm, or 3/16 inch to 31/32 inch. Yellow (warning) is from 2.38 mm to 4.76 mm, or 3/32 inch to 3/16 inch. While Red (danger) is from 0 to 2.38 mm, or 0 to 3/32 inch. Know exactly how much tread depth your tires have and whether they’re in need of replacement with a simple measurement by our tire tread measuring tool. Don’t guess with a worn-out penny, know the exact depth and whether you’ll pass inspection or need to replace your tires in an instant using an accurate tire tread depth indicator.
