Improve Your Safety And Be Ready For Helmet Updates With Our SA2025 Helmet
Keeping yourself safe on track means budgeting your racing program for the best safety equipment you can afford. Multi-layer racing suits, racing gloves, racing shoes, and more are all part of the racer’s needs to maintain their safety lap after lap. However, arguably the most critical safety item is a helmet. While racing suits, gloves, shoes, and other apparel are for fire safety purposes, racing helmets provide serious crash protection to one of your most vital organs, your brain. Brain injuries and even mild concussions can be life-threatening events, and a quality racing helmet with a Snell helmet rating is your best defense against such injuries and is all but mandatory in most any racing sanctioning body’s rules.
The current SA2020 Snell helmets rating is approved for use through 2030 (though consult your organization’s rule book for specific end of use dates). However, even Snell recommends replacing your helmet every five years, as the composite shell, foam inner structure, and even the inner liner is affected by use, sun exposure, and more, breaking down the materials and making them less effective in protecting your head in a crash. Obviously, if your helmet was involved in a major crash, it should be replaced immediately as well. The 10-year use limit is the maximum length Snell believes the rated helmet can be used in competition. The SA2025 helmet meets the SA2020 Snell helmet rating safety standard and improves on it with more rigorous standards.
These new SA2025 Snell helmet rating standards include a slightly higher impact energy test (increased velocity) in the first of two consecutive impacts at each test location on the helmet. This means the helmet’s shell and inner liner must manage more energy, which is better for you. Secondly, the maximum allowable acceleration (peak g-force) transmitted to the head form is reduced from the 300g used in SA2020 testing to 275g in SA2025 testing. This sets a tougher pass/fail criterion, meaning the helmet must absorb impact energy more effectively to protect the driver. Again, a good thing for your protection. So, while the SA2020 will be good for a few more years, investing in a SA2025 helmet now not only pushes out that replacement date for a new helmet, but provides you with more protection.
Finally, the new SA2025 certification impact and acceleration limits bring the standard into better alignment with the FIA 8859-2024 international safety standard. This is important for racers competing in international series or high-level events of course but also could be of value to racers competing in other sanctioning bodies. In the United States the most visible sanctioning body that requires FIA regulation racing helmets is IMSA (International Motor Sports Association), while others like SCCA, USAC, and NHRA focus on the Snell rating but allow dual-certification racing helmets (SA/FIA) to be used. SA2025 helmets may be considered by organizations currently using FIA standards, but we strongly recommend you confirm with the sanctioning body you plan to race within.
Lightweight Composite Shell Reduces Driver Fatigue
Any racer will tell you that the number one enemy of a racer is weight, and that includes the weight of the driver themselves. Naturally, this includes whatever the driver has on for safety equipment (suit, gloves, shoes, helmet, etc.). Minimizing a helmet’s weight not only helps with overall weight goals but also reduces driver fatigue and discomfort. A heavy helmet is tough on a racer’s neck. Cornering forces exert a lot of pressure that a racer must counter, tiring the racer. Lightweight drag racing helmets, circle track racing helmets, or autocross helmets are not only more comfortable but allow the racer to concentrate on what matters most—the race itself.
Our lightweight SA2025 racing helmet weighs in at just 58.2 ounces (size Small and Medium), which makes it one of the lightest composite fiberglass Snell approved racing helmets we carry at an outstanding value that will no doubt help your racing budget’s bottom line. Our weight savings, when compared to competitor Snell helmets, come not only from the 3mm composite fiberglass shell itself, but the use of other lightweight materials including the expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) inner liner, knit fire resistant padding (with removable cheek pads, polycarbonate eye shield, and more. You will feel the difference when you slip this helmet on and hit the track.
A Safer Helmet With All The Features You Could Want
Our new SA2025 helmet was designed with all the features racers need and want in their circle track racing helmets to keep them safe and comfortable lap after lap. While we’ve focused on just how light our SA2025 Snell approved racing helmets are you can’t ignore the generous eye port opening, leaving not only plenty of room for prescription eyewear or sunglasses, but it provides a vast viewing area safely behind a rubber sealed 3mm polycarbonate visor that includes pre-installed posts for C-style tear offs for those that race on dirt, mud, or other surfaces. The optically correct visor can be replaced with one of our optional replacement visors in Clear, Light Smoke, Dark Smoke, or Chrome to suit your racing and visibility needs.
We optimized the airflow through our new helmet to keep you cool with multiple high-flow vents. Five inlet vents located at chin level and two at the forehead in the front of the helmet, along with two exit vents at the back of the helmet. These provide continual airflow through the helmet keeping you cool. Combined with the soft knit fireproof lining you will stay comfortable and dry. When the time comes to remove your Snell racing helmet, we know all too well how frustrating it can be to pull the chin strap free, especially with gloves on. We added an easy to grab tether to our buckle to make separating the chin strap a simple one-handed motion.
With the popularity and lower cost of entry for head and neck style restraint systems we have made the ability to use a HANS-type device even easier with our updated SA2025 racing helmet by drilling the proper mounting hole locations and pre-installing the correct M6 metric internal thread posts directly into the helmet during manufacturing. This allows you to hit the track, ready to go, right out of the box. No longer do you have to carefully measure and drill your Snell helmets for the threaded inserts, sweating the details and hoping your drill bit doesn’t walk on you. With the lower cost of today’s head and neck restrain offerings we encourage racers at any level or racing class to invest in a head and neck restraint.
Finally, be sure to use something like a helmet bag for secure storage, and if you’re looking to really extend the life of your helmet we encourage the use of a balaclava or “head sock” to minimize sweat and dirt transfer to the helmet’s liner and further protect you from open flames in instances of fire.
